Sweet Briar College vs Howard University

I'm looking at both these schools. I know these schools are very different from one another ( SBC being all girls) and (Howard being an HBCU) however I am really interested in these schools. I am living in Europe right now with my parents so I have not been able to visit either, but I was wondering if any one could give me any impressions or experiences about either school, what's campus life like, what type of students attend the school stuff like that. Please and Thank you!

I don’t have experience with either, unfortunately, but if you want both - a women’s college and a HBCU - check out Spelman.

There are sub-forums for women’s colleges and African-American students that might give you more info. Do a search for Sweet Briar and Howard.

SBC has a very nice but very rural campus about 15 miles from a mid-sized city. If you like the country life and horses it’s fine. Otherwise might be tough.

I don’t know Sweet Briar, although I hear it’s a nice little school. I have more experience with Howard. However other than the fact that both seem to be great places to get a solid education, they seem to have almost nothing in common. In order to make a choice, I think you need to decide what you want (the first in each pair is Howard)

Urban/rural
midsized/small
coed/women only
University with lots of pre-professional and professional programs/LAC
Lots of school spirit/??? (I would say that Howard is much more “spirited” than my own Big 10 alma mater, I would be surprised if Sweet Briar was a spirited, only because I think very few schools are)
Greek life/no Greek life
Midatlantic/Southern
HBCU/predominantly white

Howard is a fantastic choice for someone who likes cities and wants to take advantage of all that DC has to offer, might be thinking about a more professional type degree (e.g. nursing, engineering, pharmacy, business), and wants a school with a lot of spirit and energy. My guess is that Sweet Briar serves a different kind of student equally well.

There are also lots of schools that offer some of what Howard offers and some of what Sweet Briar does. Perhaps you like that Howard’s Urban and Historically Black, but that Sweet Briar is small, women only, and focused on undergraduates in the liberal arts. If so, look at Spelman.

High stats applicants to Howard can get some pretty big merit scholarships:

Hi Smith16!

I’m a junior at Sweet Briar. Do you have specific questions about the school? I’m majoring in Business and minoring in Government and would love to answer any questions you might have!

Sweet Briar is in rural Virginia, but we’re about 20 minutes away from Lynchburg (a small city) and about 50 minutes away from Charlottesville, where UVA is located. We also have a brother school, Hampden-Sydney about an hour away. We do have a very strong riding program, but quite a bit of our population doesn’t ride, so you don’t by any means have to be a rider or interested in horses to be happy here—I don’t ride. :)
