2 Son is a junior - considering Kenyon for college - and is a swimmer. At what point should he contact the coach? I realize most schools like to have junior HS times to look at - but I also know that once HS swim season is over next spring, that things will start to get pretty crazy.

He is taking all the tests this month -SAT, PSAT, ACT so that he can have time to retake if needed. Academically he is very strong candidate - remains to be seen how the test scores shake out but am anticipating decent scores.

Contact swim staff anytime. Always good to start to have some name recognition. My D swam a couple years and finally "retired" due to long term shoulder problems. Coach Steen is an icon in DIII swimming. Facility is AMAZING. Great school - if it suits your kid. Admission is based, in great part, on desire to attend, evidenced by communications and visits. He really needs to visit at least once - more if he's not at top of applicant pool.

Thanks! I forwarded to #2 son - if he is interested, he needs to take the initiative.

Applicant pool - he is in processing of taking all the tests (he is a junior) so who knows how that will shake out, but he will have time to take again if neccessary. Grade-wise, he is going to be very strong, taking AP classes and has above a 4 point and I don't see that changing. EC's, well the big one of course is swimming - his big bro is encouraging him to make sure he has more by the time he applies senior year.

If he really likes it at Kenyon and knows he wants to go there, he needs to apply early decision. It is getting much harder to get into Kenyon than before (even for a decent swimmer). If your son is a good academic, it will help. Most people don't realize and are surprised to find out that the coaching staff at Kenyon has very little pull in admissions. That is, of course, unless your son is an absolute top swimmer who will score high at Nationals. Even some of their foreign student "A" recruits on full merit aid scholarship have to be above average in academics to get in. (My DD swam 4 years at Kenyon, but she was not an "A" recruit coming in. Yet she made Nationals all four years because she was able to pull time in her events each year).
