Swimming test?

during my interview, my interviewer said Dartmouth has a mandatory swimming test :S.
does anyone else know about this?

Yes you must be able to swim 50 yards before you graduate. If you go on the DOC trip, do it freshman year and put it behind you. There was an article this week because work is being done on the pool about seniors who have fulfilled the requirement.

http://www.thedartmouth.com/article.php?aid=2005030801050

hahaha i wish i only had to swim 50 yards anytime i got in a pool. My shortest race is double that and butterfly.

you deserve a bow handsonthedash, yeah 50 yards is short, it's like the length of a regular poool
when i was in 7th grade, i went to a swim school, every saturday morning at 7:00am, we had too be at the pool, swim 40 laps if we finish in 3hours then we continue to swim til it's 3hours, if we didn't finish in 3hours we'd have to stay to finish the 40 labs,
40x80yards=3200 yards :)

Yeah the swim test is basically can you crawl in a pool. If you cant there is a gym class waiting...

babybird,

Ya hear that?? You're gonna make that swim :);)

omg. i can't swim! i'm gonna have to learn!

does doggy-paddle count?

Anything counts if you can do a lap...backstroke, whatever

oh nooooooo....this is bad, bad news, you guys!

i'll probably drown as soon as they stick me in. I'm an Earth sign, not a Water!

cornell's has a lot more requirements.

hahaha if you need help swimming, I can teach you. I have to deal with little 3-7 year olds every spring and do it, so teaching people with intelligence should be easy enough.

and newly, i'm sorry if i sounded like i was bragging, i had a really tough morning practice (though it was a nice 61 degrees when we got out :) ) i don't think i'm going to swim in college unless I play polo.

ha, isn't it harder to teach those with intelligence simple labor-related tasks? all frustration and no learning, or so I hear. but i'll gladly submit to lessons.

if we seriously have to take a swim test.. i'm gonna either.. swim the entire length of the pool w/out coming up for a breath.. or swim in the most dumbest/retardest/craziest/idiotic-est/weirdest/wildest/etc. manner possible.. i'll just flounder the entire length of the swimming pool

what is this swimming test for?

and..

i<3dartmouth

...Do many people watch you as you swim?

And how many other colleges have this requirement? That's not fair! Can't we just run a lap or do 100 sit-ups? Can't they trust that I can swim across a pool without dying without me having to show them?

Seriously, I am so self-conscious about my body, and for good reason. I haven't worn a bathing suit for years. I don't think I could do it.

I know it's not that big of a deal, but...

the dartmouth pools are only 25 yards across (except the lane that goes through the tunnel to connect the pools)

Hmmm, this swimming test sounds suspiciously easy. There's got to be a catch--maybe you have to swim it in the dead of winter across the Connecticut River!

j/k ;)

Oh, and BTW, I <3 <3 <3 Dartmouth

whoa, looks like superduper's got competition lol

you know what? maybe i'll join.

I LOVE DARTMOUTH WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL

Hey guys,

The self conscious thing is important so they ask you if you are comfortable swimming in front of a large group. If you dont do it with the other first years no one will ever know and you can go later one on one with a lifeguard.

you can always do what my dad did when he took his swim test in college: go as far back as possible, run as fast as you can, dive as far as you can, and float to the other side. they commented it was the fartherest dive they've ever seen.
