switching/changing majors

Hi everyone, I have recently been thinking about changing my major. My major is Media Arts and I’m a Junior. I want to become a News Reporter, I always had. When I was a Freshman I wanted to become an actress more and my advisor told me that Media Arts would be the right major for me. But, I have always wanted to pursue both and I thought that Media Arts would be in the middle of both. My school doesn’t have journalism, so I picked the one I thought would be the closest to it.

I was thinking about changing it to English because with a Media Arts major I learn more about cameras, producing, directing and yes, all that evolves into Media but it’s like behind the scenes and I want to be in front of a camera…

Is it too late to change majors?

Would it be necessary to change majors?

Should I just get my bachelor’s degree in Media Arts and later a Master’s in Journalism?

Please answer and tell me what you think. Thanks!

It’s probably not technically too late. Whether it’s too late if you want to graduate in four years depends on your college, but if you are a junior in college in the middle of your second semester, I’m going to guess that it is. Check your major handbook and compare the classes you’d have to take, and talk to your advisor.

No, it’s not necessary to change majors. Journalists come from all sorts of backgrounds. What’s likely more important is experience. Do you write for the school newspaper, or if your school has a radio or TV station are you involved in that? Have you done any internships in the field, or are you looking for some?
