Just wondering how one goes about changing their majors. I've heard that Newhouse students work directly with their majors as freshman and i've heard that that's not until Jr year. My D got accepted into Newhouse for Fall as a Magazine major. She's thinking now though that she wants to switch to Broadcast Journalism.

It’s very easy to switch your major within schools but between schools would vary depending on the standards of the school. You’re never officially declared as the major you choose when applying to SU. A student still has to go through the official paperwork process to declare his or her major. Since your daughter is already admitted into Newhouse, it’ll be no trouble to choose Broadcast Journalism as a major instead.

My recommendation is for her to start thinking of a possible minor since Newhouse requires all of it’s students to minor in something.

Just wanted to agree with House of London. You take a survey course the first semester in Newhouse where you are introduced to all of the majors. There is a core of required courses within Newhouse, no matter what your major is. You don’t really need to pin it down until sophomore year. I don’t think it matters at all what it said on your freshmen application, except that they will give you a student advisor during orientation in that same major.
