Have any of your college students ever actually moved from one dormitory to another the first semester? Long story made short(er), my daughter mentioned to her advisor that she isn't super happy in her dorm for a lot of reasons (too complicated to go into here) and the advisor sent her to the housing office, and they talked to her and offered her three choices of rooms in three different dorms. So now she has to decide whether or not to move. Is this unusual?

Not terribly. There is lots of shifting around dorms in the first couple of months of school. But your daughter would be smart to check out if the second option is enough of an improvement to justify the hassle (or expectations.)

Yes, my D moved just after Thanksgiving I think it was. She started having problems with the roommate in the middle of October. Strange behavior such as roomie locking the door to the room when D was just going down the hall to take a shower, deliberately writing on D’s dry erase board with permanent marker, and other issues. They had been ok in the beginning, and D never knew what changed. They went to mediation with the RA and I guess nothing was resolved (D was handling it all). D then went to housing and they were able to get another room for her. She didn’t want to leave the room she had, but she couldn’t stay with that roommate. So she took the other room and ended up loving it. She actually was able to keep it for the remaining 3 1/2 years.

My dd almost changed dorms, until the housing folks were able to offer her a single in her original dorm. Truthfully, I was more upset about the possibility of her changing dorms than she was.

“Is this unusual?”

That’s a lot more flexible than I would expect most colleges to be. I’d say she lucked out in terms of options.

Ditto above posts. My very first roommate freshman year told me the first day she really wanted another dorm. When space became available she moved and I was happy to see her go. Son’s first roommate did second semester away so he got a new roommate.
