Switching Dorms and REX

So, I got my dorm assignment and while I like the dorm I got, I just realized that it is going to be too expensive to stay where I am. It is a dining dorm, and while the price for a double is acceptable, the price of the meal plan is simply too much (each meal comes out to ~$9, and that includes the breakfasts). My goal, now, is to switch to a dorm I like that has no meal-plans, which will give me greater flexibility and help me save money with regard to food.

My main questions are: How easy is it to switch dorms after REX? Am I likely to get my 1st or 2nd choice?

Currently, I am a big fan of Burton-Conner and MacGregor (ironically, a single @ MacGregor with no meal plan is more affordable than a double and meal plan at my current dorm). I also have some interest but little knowledge of Random. I have no interest in Senior House or Bexley, and I have only lukewarm reception for East Campus and New House (for the former it seems really cool but too outside my comfort zone to call home and for the latter the cultural breakdown is not personally appealing). Anyways, information on dorms would also be appreciated (and, who knows, maybe you can even convince me that East Campus or New are the right place for me).

In general, it’s not difficult to move after rush – your lotteried housing assignment is intended to be a temporary one. In practice, your ability to move out depends on whether people lotteried into that dorm want to move out, and whether lots of people not lotteried into that dorm want to move in.

The numbers for the last two years are here[/url”>http://tech.mit.edu/V129/N34/housing.html]here and here[/url”>http://tech.mit.edu/V130/N33/dormlottery.html]here. It looks like BC has been a popular choice for the past few years in the readjustment lottery.

Which dorm did you get into? I believe people in Maseeh and McCormick can’t switch out, though I’d have to double-check.

@PiperXP, I know you’re right about McCormick, but I’m not sure on Maseeh. I’m in Simmons right now, so this should not be an issue. Simmons is cool, especially because I know some of the rising sophomores in there and a few of the other incoming freshmen. but I just can’t break the bank staying there.

It will be really difficult to get into BC. MacG is probably your best bet. Try to visit New during rex, because there are non-cultural houses too. Its also being renovated this summer!

From what I’ve heard in the 2015 facebook group, Maseeh kids can’t move out. Though, since you’re temped in Simmons, this isn’t an issue :)

OK, this is so uncool.

What the hell is Maseeh and how on earth am I even supposed to pronounce it? Did they somehow rename Old Ashdown/Phoenix House/whatever the hell it used to be called? Did they ever even have a name for it picked out in the first place?

I feel old.

It’s pronounced “Massey” and yeah, it’s the new Old Ashdown. We’ll get off your lawn now.

The i3 video is like “Which dorm rhymes with sassy? Masseh!”

And thank you all for your responses. I’m will maintain hope that I get placed into Burton-Conner, even though it’s unlikely. And maybe after REX there will be other dorms I’m interested in/prefer.

k4r3n2: And stay off!

:p

For what it’s worth, Laura, I’m on the porch with you and your shotgun. Probably knitting something.

I’m still aggravated that they ripped all those really nice kitchens out of Ashdown.
