Switching from Chemistry to Chemical Enginnering

My son has been accepted into the College of Chemistry as a Chemistry major. How difficult would it be to switch into Chemical Engineering? I understand that they are both in the same college, and I have heard that major switches inside a college are relatively easy. I have also looked at the suggested course lists and it appears that the courses are roughly comparable for the first two semesters.

Can any current or past students talk about what is required to switch from Chemistry to Chemical Engineering?

I’m an admitted student also in the same situation (I want to change from chem to ChemE). I emailed one of the undergraduate advisers at the College of Chemistry and they said that you had to wait at least 2 semesters before you could petition a change in majors, even if it is within the same college. Though, I think the change itself should be easy, your son and I may just have to wait.

Also, your son can take the freshman major-exclusive courses for both chem and chemE (chem96 and cbe40) in freshman year. This may mean that there will be a bit higher courseload, but your son will be able to explore both majors and choose if he really wants to switch or not.

Almost nothing is required to switch from chemistry to chemical engineering. To officially switch you have to wait a couple of semesters, but you can take classes as though you are a chemical engineering major, so it really doesn’t matter at all.
