So I got John Jay, which I indicated as my first choice (didn't research much; I didn't think I would attend). But now I really don't want to live there. Is there any chance that I could transfer to a Carman double during the Fall semester?

P.S: Can any current students comment on how social JJ is? I've really only read negative things about it. :/

On the Class of 2015 Facebook group there’s a Doc called Potential Room Swaps where people have been posting their housing info and looking for people who might like to switch.

I’m in a JJ single as well. It was my first choice, and my second would have been a Carman double. I’ve heard that the social scene in JJ largely depends on the floor–you can have a really tight floor, or it can be kind of awkward. I’m hoping for the best–I would have liked the social scene of Carman, but at the end of the day I think I’ll be better off having privacy and a quiet(er) place to return to. I would rather be able to get work done in my dorm than have the entire freshman party scene in my hallway, and from what I’ve heard, Carman can be kind of over the top in that sense.

Then again I’m still a prefrosh, so I don’t really know anything for sure.

I wouldn’t worry too much about John Jay. I know plenty of people who lived in John Jay, became close with the people on their floor, and had great social lives. Of course, I had the opposite experience, but the point is that John Jay is not a fundamentally anti-social dorm. And even if you don’t get along with the people on your floor, you can always join clubs, make friends with people in class/other floors/other dorms, join a frat, and so on.

And there are good reasons to pick John Jay: the privacy of a single, living in the same building as the cafeteria and Health Services, and not having people treat your dorm as a place for non-stop parties.

But if you’re a little shy and want to make sure that you’re more outgoing and social, definitely consider arranging a room swap into Carman or the LLC. Prefrosh hate the LLC (I know I did last summer) but most of the people who live there end up loving the suite-style living, amazing kitchens, and friendships they form with upperclassmen.

The negative comments about JJ are unwaranted and usually from people who have greener grass syndrome about Carmen or never actually lived in JJ. There are other threads about the pros and cons of each dorm but suffice it to say that JJ is a really social place and you will become close with most of your floor. Also, singles >> doubles.

I had a john jay single and i’ve never regretted it one bit. I know people who have transferred from carman into john jay but not the reverse (nb not saying they dont exist).
I loved my floor and really never felt alone. When i first had to choose, I worried about what people said about john jay being lonely etc…I found most of it to be untrue. The truth is its really nice to have a single, and your own space etc. You may not get the chance to get a single sophomore year. I’d stick with the single.

Thanks guys. I’m actually fine with JJ now. A single is what I was looking for anyways. Kinda wish I had looked into the LLC a little bit more but whatever.
