Switching into Bio major

Has anyone been able to switch into a bio major without completing all the lower div requirements?
I am planning on applying both in winter and spring this year and by the start of winter quarter I would be missing chem7l and phys1c+cl and by spring I should be done with all LD classes (except bild2)
I want to switch to biochem/cell bio so I was wondering what are the chances of getting into biochem/cell bio in the winter (my gpa is pretty good) and also, are there only a certain number of seats available for each bio major? If so, would it be wiser to switch into an 'unpopular' bio major and switch again after getting in?

First, yes, you can switch into the bio department without completing all the reqs, but your chances of getting in are much lower. The difference between a person who has completed all the prereqs vs someone who has done some of them is actually larger than you’d think. If you complete them all and maintain a decent GPA, you’re just about guaranteed in.

Second, no there aren’t a certain amount of “seats” within each major. The impacted status of the major was (someone correct me if I’m wrong) because there are too many people who want to major in biology that they have to limit the amount of biology degrees.

Third, no, ALL majors within the department are impacted. You are applying to the department, not for a specific major. For example, I’m a Physiology and Neuroscience major. I can switch freely to Biochem/Cell bio and back whenever I want. Once you’re in, you’re in.

You are right on all counts, AceAites  Just adding on:

I think they only accept people who have completed all the LDs during the winter apps. This is just my guess because they accept far fewer people in winter (~40) compared to spring (~150).

Bild2 isn’t even a prereq for biochem/bio, right? So you should be done with all your LDs by this spring, and if your gpa is decent you will get in.

Lastly, people generally choose the major that requires the LDs they’ve completed. For example, I finished bild2 (via ap credit) but couldn’t enroll in chem7l, so I chose EBE as my major and then switched to Microbio after I was accepted into the bio department.

How are my odds if I am just missing ONE courses full of satisfying all the pre-reqs? This is because I am biochem/chem and pretty much all the lower div overlap except for phys 2C. I don’t want to over-commit myself to taking phys2c because not only am I not sure that I will get into the bio department I am also not sure about doing biochem/bio instead of biochem/chem.

@DistressStudent: If you apply during the Winter, you should be fine, given you have a decent GPA.
