I'm a rising junior and was wondering if it'd look bad for me to switch out of Honors Spanish Literature and take Honors French I. I'm not amazing at Spanish due to having a weak base due to transferring schools going into sophomore year. Would it look bad to take French I instead of Spanish Literature (VII). I finished third year Spanish with a 94 but with two APs and independent science research it may be a lot of work. What are your thoughts?

I also have the option of taking Japanese I

What’s the highest level of Spanish you achieved?
What colleges are you thinking of?
Most schools would consider that AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature are among the strongest AP’s so if you took French I it wouldn’t come near that. If you have 3 years of Spanish or higher, you could just not take more, which would be fine for most universities except Top 50 universities/LACs (and would still meet the minimum requirement for Top 50.)
It also depends on the colleges you’re looking at and on how you’d do it:
Would you take Honors French I junior year, an intensive summer French class, and Honors French III senior year, thus presenting two languages at Level 3 or more? => this would be quite impressive.
However taking just one year of French would be completely pointless.

I’ve finished three years of Spanish by the end of my sophomore year. So I can either go AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, or Honors Spanish Literature (4th year equivalent). And as for the summer classes I start school on Thursday lol so that’s too late. I’d take Spanish literature just afraid it’d do more harm to my GPA than good. My current schedule looks like this.
APUSH
AP English Literature
Honors Spanish Literature
Honors Pre-Calculus and Calculus
Honors Physics
Honors Latin III & IV
Advanced Topics in Science (Astronomy)
Honors Computer Science
Independent Science Research (Theoretical Physics and Neurology)
And I have Varsity Cross Country which causes me to get home around 7 P.M. I guess I’m getting junioritis

Stay with Honors Spanish Literature. Although three years of two languages LOOKS impressive, mastery (4+) of one language is even better.

See I plan on taking AP Latin senior year so I’m not too sure it’d make that much of a difference. I could replace Spanish with an AP possibly

Why didn’t you mention your Latin history? Take whichever you’re better at. Take only ONE language.

I prefer Latin over Spanish but my school requires three years of modern language in high school, testing out of Spanish year 1 caused this haha

In which case, stick with Spanish. Starting another language at this juncture will not benefit you unless you get to level 3 or beyond by your senior year. Mastery of one modern foreign language trumps a bit of knowledge of two IMO.

As long as you take AP Latin Senior year, you don’t have to take Spanish Literature, but it may be good for you to actually stick with it and take the Subject test - remember colleges also have a language requirement and taking the Subject test may exempt you from a couple classes at least (depending on the college).

If you won’t take French up to Level 3, it’s absolutely pointless to take it Junior year. Especially with AP Latin planned for next year.
(As for summer classes, it was for AFTER your junior year )

So, essentially, either take Spanish Lit or another humanities class of your choice, not French I, unless you can push yourself to French3.

I just found out I only have three elective slots senior year .-. So far I have AP Calculus, AP Computer Science, and AP Physics planned. Unless I can negotiate with the guidance counselor I may not be able to take AP Latin

So, take Spanish Literature, this way you’re covered.

The more years you take with a language, the better it looks for you and it really can help you out in the future. Good luck with whatever you do end up taking!
