I'm haven't applied to any colleges yet but hypothetically if i was to get accepted into an art school for fine art, is it possible to switch majors to computer animation right after? The only reason I'm applying with a fine arts major is that I am much stronger painting or drawing and I think I have much higher chances of being accepted meanwhile I'm very new to animation. I have only self taught myself very basic concepts of animating but I know I want to do it as a career.

It depends on the school. Try searching for “change major [new major]” on the web site of each school you may apply to. This may tell you whether changing major is merely a formality that has no requirements besides being able to complete the new major without delaying graduation and turning in the needed paperwork, or the major in question is oversubscribed so that there is a competitive admission process or high GPA requirement to enter or change to that major.

It can be a little different with art schools. See when your school choices expect you to declare a major or set your path. See if there are freshman requirements everyone follows before officially deciding. This isn’t like some big U’s where you apply to a specific program- eg, the school of engineering versus school of journalism. At some art schools, your strengths may get you in, but then you still go through the basics before declaring. That would give you a chance to sample animation. You may not want to do the technical work and fine arts folks can still be involved with the art behind animation.

I’m sure you can switch eventually, you just have to talk with your counselor or your school’s academic office. Everyone is different and changes through their first year of college, who knows you may end up wanting to stay with your current major. I wouldn’t fret it as you can call the school, you just started - nothing official yet, still plenty of time to change.

It depends on the school. I was accepted into my school as an engineering major. During the summer during orientation I switched to undecided and majored in Economics. Now I’m working in Software Engineering so it doesn’t really matter what you major in as long as you have internships, leadership positions, and above a 3.2 in GPA.
