switching majors?

i got accepted to pitt for a&s for an intended field of communications and rhetoric, but i've been hearing about how you can switch majors/departments and i wanna get the right info about this. Does that mean that i can switch to a dual major for a&s and business? also i wanted to know, if you can switch majors why is it harder to get into certain departments than others (i'm talking about ones without caps)?

sidenote: my boyfriend got deferred from pitt and he applied for business admin. he has a 3.57 gpa and 2010 SAT score (690m, 630cr). however, he got a 3.15 gpa for the first marking period but is on his way to a 4.0 for the second. he wants to know what his chances are for getting in.

I know that it is easy to “switch” majors within your college (such as A&S) as a freshman because you really don’t have a major yet. I don’t know what the process is for transferring colleges, though I imagine it is tougher and there has to be room within the college.

There’s no cap or “getting into a department” for majors within A&S (not that I know of) but switching to another major in your case isn’t a problem at all because what you indicate on your app as your intended major doesn’t really mean anything. Once you’re a sophomore and declare your major that’s what really counts as your major.

There is a dual A&S/CBA major but you don’t need to transfer schools to be in it, you apply to it later on (usually freshman or sophomore year). The dual major has a cap because it’s across two schools within Pitt. In that course of study I think you’re considered an A&S student but take business courses within CBA as your second major.
