Switching majors

I have gotten accepted UT at the College of Natural Sciences to major in pre-pharmacy (Really, just need to get my pre-reqs and apply to pharmacy school). The reason why I chose this field was really for the money...Although I do enjoy math and chemistry, I enjoy liberal arts way more. I've always wanted to be a teacher and am considering switching to major in English and possibly minor in psychology, because in the long run, I don't KNOW if pharmacy would be for me...But also with the teachers being laid off and such was another reason for me to choose pharmacy over teaching.

Just a question...If it would be hard to switch majors from Natural Sciences to COLA? I've actually heard a lot of people apply to COLA so I was just wondering.

I'm entering my 3rd year of college this Fall and still so confused on what I really want. :/ I have some conflicting ideas on what to major in. >.< But just a question. And for people who have switched, (especially between these 2 schools) any input would be greatly appreciated! Another thing that sucks is that I'm already in CNS and don't know if I could even switch schools by Fall. It's already May.

The only major in COLA that requires an actual application to get in is psych and it is fairly competitive to get into as an internal transfer. A lot of pre-health natural science majors switch to psych since you can still get a BS and a lot remain pre-med, etc. You don’t have to be a science major to apply for pharm school as long as you have the pre-reqs.

Yes, you do have to think about career choices in the long-run but like other grad schools, pharm school is looking for diversity. If you enjoy english a lot more and can excel in it, then go for it. I know someone who graduated UT last year in english and landed a pretty good job right away while I also know people who graduated in natural sciences and still can’t find jobs. It’s really up to you for the major and having relevant organizations and work experience under your belt definitely helps.

If you’re going for english, I believe you just have to apply to COLA and you’ll get in soon since apps are accepted year round. Psychology is more competitive so I believe there’s an application period and deadlines for them.

I wouldn’t go into pharmacy for the money. IF you get accepted into a pharmacy school it will be an additional 4 years of school. The job market for pharmacists has tightened considerably and is no longer a sure thing. Then you will get to work retail hours at a job you don’t even know if you like. Go with your heart.
