So I'm juggling 10 college applications at the same time, and I noticed that Yale requires another essay if the intended major is engineering. I'm currently most interested in biomedical engineering, but I really don't have the time (don't want to) write a whole entire essay... Could I put another major such as molecular/cellular biology or undecided and switch back later?

yes there is no barrier in doing so.

T26E4 is correct; I might just note that there might be a slight edge to indicating Engineering, as there has been lately an emphasis on recruiting STEM (not that bio isn’t stem, but I think Engineering is more of a focus). But if the essay is a barrier, don’t worry about it.

Agreed since you do not have to declare your major until the end of sophomore year. However, if what donnaleighg says is true, you may want to buckle down and do it. You have a month until apps are due. If you can’t juggle everything else you have to do and also do the essay within the next 30 days, I would seriously think about whether you can handle the workload at Yale or any other top tier university - especially in a STEM major. Sorry to be blunt, but that’s the truth.

I read somewhere, but can’t find the source, that the “well-known” fact of Yale’s emphasizing STEM has led to an increase in self-reported STEM-interested applicants with ECs, coursework, etc. that were not consistent with interests along those lines. I’m sure some kids come late to the STEM world, but I think Adcoms are looking more closely for consistency.
