Well I'm having difficulty picking a major. Last semester I "finaly" decided to study history but my heart is just not into it. What's even worse is my schedule will be completely crammed with history classes for the next 2 years as I try to graduate on time. I'm considering making the switch to sociology. The requirements are much more lax, allowing me to take electives to my heart's content. Also, my school has a 5-year BA/MA option which may help me get into law school, correct?

OK, let me just get to the point: I'm concerned that sociology won't be percieved as difficulty enough. As much as I hate to say it, it's basically a depository for all the student athletes in my school.

I really don't know what to do... Please help!

They're not going to distinguish sociology from history in terms of difficulty. But no, the MA isn't going to help you at all.

A graduate degree won't help me get into law school?

Nope. Certainly not a liberal arts MA.

Now I know that's not true... Why the attitude Americanski, have I done anything to offend you?

No, but honestly, it really won't help you. The MA GPA won't be considered in your LSAC GPA and it's really not especially impressive or unusual.

I didn't read that as "attitude," just the very harsh fact that, unfortunately, having a grad degree is a very small consideration for law school admissions.

I do think that a grad degree plays some role in getting you into law school, but the LSAT and GPA present the first hurdle. If you don't have the numbers, nothing else will really get you in.

I think that sociology will be fine - some of my law school friends majored in that and are doing fine in law school. Unless I'm mistaken, you'll only get bumped down if your major is completely comical - like communications studies.

Thanks. I decided to do English with a minor in history... English is what I like, and I've had much success in my English classes thus far.

One thing I did not mention is that English is my second language so hopefully that will be somewhat intriguing. I'll be applying to DePaul Law. GPA and LSAT scores are the most important, of course, but I've spoken to many people in admissions (I work at the law library @ DePaul) and know that DePaul considers other factors as well.

Anyway, thanks for your help!

Good to know that a sociology major isn't frowned upon. I'm seriously considering majoring in it, but I know that my interests are likely to change as I try out different courses in college.

Btw, the Chipotle I go to seems to be the hangout place for DePaul law students. They seem to be a cool bunch!

On Jackson Street? Mmmmm, Chipotle :)
