Switching out Honors class in Senior Year

It is second semester in senior year of high school. I got a C first semester in IB English 12 and want to switch out and into a regular English class. Should I do it? If I did, would it affect my college admissions negatively?

I advise you not to drop the course if you believe you can at least pass it second semester and get A’s or B’s for the rest of your other courses. I say this because second semester grades do not generally factor into admissions; they only have to be sufficient to the extent that your offers of admission are not revoked.

If you drop it, you are required to inform each and every college you have applied to. Though this depends on other factors such as how the strength of the rest of your transcript stands, I would wager to say that the decrease in course rigor will not look good for admissions purposes.

Completely agree with Episteme. If you can get a C again next semester, odds are colleges won’t really care as you’ll already have been accepted. However, dropping a class is something that colleges will consider as part of your admissions, and it will impact you negatively.

What if I get 2 C’s 2nd semester? I had 2 C’s 1st semester.

Where are you applying? I don’t think you’ll get your admissions revoked for 2 C’s (don’t push it any further though!), but it’s just better to be safe than sorry.

I am applying to basically all the UCs(except Berkeley,Merced,Riverside, San Francisco, and UCLA) and my top choice is UCSD. For CSUs I am applying to CSU Pomona, CSU San Luis Obispo, CSU Long Beach, and San Jose State University.I am applying to USD and Santa Clara for privates and 2 more I am not sure of. If my UC GPA is 3.8 and have a 1620 SAT score(already a narrow chance of getting into UCSD b/c of this).

I am not very familiar with the admissions standards of CSU’s and USD and Santa Clara. All I know is that they are less selective than the UC’s you have applied to.

I’m not sure what would happen if you get 2 C’s again. That may or may not be enough to have an offer of admission rescinded. I have a feeling that you are cutting it very close to the edge, especially since you probably have a less than ideal odd of being admitted into one of the UC’s you’ve applied to (but I am not an admissions officer, so don’t take my word or that of anyone else on here; your applications have been filed and all you can do is wait for the decisions).

The best situation would be for you to get A’s and B’s in all your courses second semester, but only you can decide if that’s a possibility or not.
