Switching the business major

I'm a senior in college with an accounting major with one more semester left after this current one. I have decided that I really do not enjoy accounting to the point where I would want to do it for the rest of my life. I don't even feel like business is really my thing anymore. I feel like I would work better with computer science kind of material since I was always tech savvy, which is why during my last semester I plan to take more computer classes at the very least.

Either way, I am going to complete my undergrad with a BS in Business Admin/Accounting. But I just want to know is it possible to switch gears and get some sort of information technology internship/job with this? Or would I have to go back to school and take a bunch of computer classes?

I think it may be hard to get an internship unless you are enrolled in a computer or IT program through school unless you are one of those people that just excels in computers. Many great programmers never receive a degree.

On the flip side, an Accounting firm Partner I interview with yesterday told me that she originally received a degree in Computer Science and then found she liked Accounting through that so went back for two years to get another degree. I would definitely do what you have to and follow what you want to do. I don’t know your exact age, but you will at least be working another 30-40 years so be happy in what you do.

I personally was graduating in Marketing this quarter and then switched to Accounting. Now I have two great internships lined up in two months, that I’m having to choose from. Good luck to you!
