Syracuse v. Texas

Hey all.

So its down to decision week for me and schools. I am cutting it close. Just flew back from my last visits (incl. Syracuse...Texas was early April) and I have boiled it down to 2 choices for school. I intend to major in Radio/TV/Film at the communications schools in one of these fine institutions. But I am unsure which one to pick. I was wondering anyone's opinion on the matter or any pros/cons you might have for me.

Important Factors: (Obviously I won't get all I want, so I'm going to have to make sacrifices)

Student Body I am a California kid born and raised in Los Angeles county so I am looking for a student body/community for college that I can fit in easily. I know that Syracuse is predominantly Northeast kids, and Texas is predominantly Texans so I am curious about this part.
Quality of education (for major and overall) Basically, which is the better school academically for my major and overall?
Size of student body/classes - I come from a private school of 450 students but I'm not so sure if there would be much of a difference between Syracuse and Texas for this with regards to class size
Sports Pretty equal. Texas amazing football. Syracuse amazing basketball (and lax).

Factors that already swing one direction heavily:

Texas:
-Better Location - Only one direct flight needed to go home. Syracuse takes all day to travel.
-Better Weather - Syracuse is freezing and Texas is similar to L.A

Syracuse:
-Beautiful campus, the best one I've seen

THANKS FOR ANY INPUT.

the student body - you will be able to make friends at either

not sure which school is better for that major, i havent really heard about either schools program. but i am sure it is good at both schools

go to syracuse if size is a big factor texas has a lot of undergrads while syracuse has around 13k

yea you can say their equal, texas has the better football program, while syracuse has the better basketball program

texas is a great location, but not similar to L.A. weather here can change very quick. it is freezing at times and HOT at others. lol and when its freezing its FREEZING

both schools are great, if size is a MAJOR factor then you will certainly be better off at Syracuse. if you can sacrifice smaller classes then im sure TExas will make up for it

Um, “freezing” is a relative term. I grew up in Texas and have lived in the northeast for over 20 years. The cold in Austin is NOTHING like you would experience at Syracuse, trust me. And it will be hot in September, but then it will cool down. By late February, my friends and I were usually out by the pool!

Syracuse - ave high temp in January is 31, ave low temp is 14
Austin - ave high temp in January is 59, ave low temp is 39. When it rarely gets down to 14 in Austin, it’s big news!

Someone will probably flame me for this, but in my experience, people IN GENERAL are friendlier in Texas than in the northeast. When I took my kids down to the UT campus several years ago, they couldn’t believe how friendly people were. One student asked if we needed help. A security guard called us over and I thought we’d done something wrong. Nope, he showed us a picture of his granddaughter and gave my boys a photo of the football team! I should add that people up here are great once you get to know them, but you just don’t get as many smiles or help from people who don’t know you well.

I had only a couple of huge classes, and one of them (US History with George Forgie) was my favorite at UT, because the professor was so amazing. I found the teachers to be very accessible.

I don’t know much about your major, so I can’t help you with the relative strength of the two schools.

okay just gonna throw in on the student body, you could easily meet friends and people anywhere but Syracuse they like Californian kids and there are actually more than you would think there, girls from what I hear are easy too especially if your from Cali, when I was there some hot chick eye **ed the out of me on the tour, seriously I felt like I needed a shower after. I am a prospective sophomore transfer and I visited in January, yeah it was freaking cold, I thought I would be able to handle it but it was a lot colder than I thought, and I had gloves, scarf, long sleeve shirt and pretty big jacket on. Long cold winter nights is my only thing, and the fact from so cal to syracuse it is like 3 flights, plus flying into that crappy little airport I have to wait 55 minutes for my luggage to get off the plane and get to the luggage carousel.

at cuse you will still have large classes, but not as large as UT although I was told at cuse you could still have a lecture class of 400 which seems odd for a school of only 10,000 undergrads. Syracuse’s broadcasting school is very strong not sure about UT.

I heard that Syracuse has the best communication school.
But it snows till April in Syracuse, as you are from CA, you probably like the weather in Texas better.

Daughter is at Newhouse…it’s a great school/great resources/classes…but…

Have heard that the film program at UT-Austin is probably one of the best in the country; connections with LA producers/$$ to create films/ etc…

If you were admitted into the UT Film program (the one where only 25? are admitted) this choice is a no-brainer…

Only 25?? Wow, that’s amazing.

As a so. cal dad working in the entertainment business, being on Board of advisors to Boston U. school of communication, father of a freshman RTF major, and having many family members currently attending Syracuse…Here goes…

Congrats on getting accepted to two great programs. I do not think you can go wrong with Newhouse or UT. As you have said, each has it’s own merits and minuses.
Student demo…Syracuse while drawing some national students is made up of primarily kids from the Northeast. UT, mostly texas. I am happy to report that Texas is spreading their wings uite a bit. Last year, we were aware of only a small handful of kids going to Texas. My d, was the first from her high school. This year, 8 kids got in from her HS, and three are going. My d told me yesterday that she can’t believe how many kids are going next year. 3 from her school, one from viewpoint, one from oakwood, a few from Beverly hills, and another private westside school. That is just her circle of influence. The dean told me last year, they want to increase the amount of kids from So. Cal. They started a semester program in LA a few yeas ago, and that has really helped the students in RTF, and the schools recruiting efforts. As far as the difference in students, I would say it is significant. Syracuse students tend to be more of the stereotypical NY pushy kids. Intense would be a good word to describe. Texans are much more polite and laid back. My daughter pointed out on spring break when she was home, she had not opened a door all year in Texas. That is not something oyu would say here in CA or Syracuse. Both schools have smart kids. Depends on what you want.
Location…Austin beats syracuse by a large margin. Take away the beauty of the Cuse campus, and the city is an armpit. Two planes and a whole day of travel from LA. Besides the long cold winters, it is a very grey city. Not sure why, but known for it. I can not speak to the social aspects of the city of Cuse, though I do not hear much about it. Austin is one of the coolest cities in the Country. 6th street is the best time anywhere. The music scene is as varied and deep as it gets. The food is shockingly good in the city. Austin has great weather. More humidity in the warm weather months. Stays hot a few weeks longer than LA. Heat more like the valley than westside. Austin has some rainy months. Warmer weather makes it more tolerable than northeast snow. Winter days are 50-65, nights 10-15 degrees cooler.
School spirit. Texas by a mile. Nothing comes close to UT football weekends. Syracuse(I have been) does not come close. While cuse basketball is great, and next year should be stellar, UT has a very good program. Don’t forget they made it ti number 1, and then the dreaded curse killed them. A history of good players. TJ ford, DJ augustine, Kevin Durant, and many more. Recently, you could say they have been equal or close to cuse. Baseball team is top five, and too many more. IF you care about sports and spirit, I think burnt orange is better than orangemen.

Reputation. On a pure school basis, Texas out ranks Syracuse. Not enough to make a difference. Newhouse is a great Comm school. They have a deep alumni network in NY and LA. I think they are known more for TV, PR, Journalism, than for film. I could be wrong, just my perception. UT school of Comm. is very impressive. Rising up the ranks in most polls. It does not have the depth of years of Alumni network, but as a result of UTLA program, they have a good young network that seems to support each other. I do not know if Cuse has an LA program for a semester. I have spoken at BU’s, Emerson"s, and Texas. They are really good programs, and have helped their students get jobs when they graduate. I am sorry, but do not know What cuse does or does not.

Bottom line, you can not go wrong. You have two great choices. MY d could not be happier. She loves everything about the school. She is part of greek life, she is working at the TV station on a music show, she works relatively hard, and helped to make UT the number one party school in America.

Good Luck, Either school will be awesome. Mostly lifestyle decisions.

^^great post…totally agree on all counts…Syracuse does have an LA program (semester long) just started but I totally agree with socaldad…and, yes, film at Newhouse is not their strong suit at this point…where I think at UT, film IS their strong point from what I have heard…

Thanks for the advice everyone.

popnpoper, you should compare the quickness of responses you’ve gotten on the Texas board (4 in about 45 minutes, even though you posted at 1:20 am) versus those you’ve gotten on the Syracuse board (zero in almost 13 hours with 24 views before I looked at it). I would think that should tell you something right there.

Haha now THATS an interesting point there Maine.

maybe its 250
