Right now, I'm debating between Syracuse and UT- Austin. I am planning on applying the school of communications at both.

I know that if I go to Syracuse, I would probably have more opportunities in my field (advertising/marketing). However, I don't feel like I would be happy there. It's SO far away (I live in Texas), the weather is atrocious, and it's in a city that I'm not a big fan of.

If I go to UT, I probably wouldn't have as many opportunities for internships and that sort of thing, but I would be closer to home, in a city that I love, and in a climate that I'm used to.

Assuming I get into both schools, which one should I go to? They're both excellent schools in my field, but I'm not sure what to do.

Any advice for me?

UT. You might also change your mind on the major you go for. It has to be less expensive. Are you in the top 8% of your class?

I second Austin. It seems like you would want to go there more than Syracuse. I imagine it would also save you money, although I don’t know the financial situation.

UT. And use the money you save to study abroad because communications is an international business these days.

And what makes you think you’d have more opportunities graduating from Syracuse? Just make sure you visit your career center starting in year 2 (if not sooner) to identify internships, useful and supportive alumni, and other resources. Too many people wait for their senior year to visit the career center, failing to take advantage of what could be some amazing resources and opportunities. Think of the interesting resume you can put together in four years, if you plan ahead!

Thanks, everyone.

And I’m not in the top 8% of my class.

Also, I come from a low-income family. My mom makes about $25-26,000/year. My dad isn’t in the picture and we aren’t getting child support due to him being in prison.

Bump?

Thanks again to everyone who has replied so far.

If you’re not in the top 8% you won’t make it into UT. What are your stats?

See what each school offers you as far as financial aid/scholarships go. If Syracuse offers you nothing, and you have to take out $45,000/year in student loans in order to go there, I’d say that UT-Austin would be a no-brainer. However, who knows if they’ll give you grants or other financial aid in order to make it comparable.
