My daughter has penciled in her audition at Syracuse Feb 2nd, but we still haven’t heard if she made it past prescreening (not 100% sure which program she is applying for, but she is a singer, interested in the music industry. Have kept out of the process except for paying bills!). I would love to try and book our plane tickets as well as schedule a campus tour, especially as she has never seen the school, and that weekend the Super Bowl is in our home town (go Vikes!) and the airport will be a ZOO!
I think you have a legitimate reason to call the school and politely share your concern about your ability to get a flight in and out of msp that weekend and inquire about when you will know. I would definitely know the name of the program before you call - MT, VP or I think they may have a recording program there - as the response could depend on program. They may or may not ask for your D’s name. I did call on one school as I was in the position of worrying about buying an affordable ticket and the school told me that my D had passed the pre-screen and I could buy the ticket. In many cases I think they’ll at least give you an idea of when you will hear. Note the school could be closed still but I would guess admin people are working.
And btw, I’m from Mpls and my D looked at Syracuse too. We visited and I really liked the school. She got waitlisted for MT there but came off the list…she had already decided on another school for VP…but I really liked the faculty there.
Good luck!
Another twin cities person dreading that weekend. We’re actually driving out of town to get out of the hoopla. My kid is only a junior. Good luck to your singer!
Thanks all! I did call and they very very helpful (had to do the safe at U pf Miami. Hate being THAT parent…). Sounds like both are all-day events. Happy happy joy joy! But at least by mid-Feb we will have finished jumping through hopes and can start hoping for acceptance letters!
Yay! I understand the comment about being “that parent”. But having gone through process and having had a kid in college, I found two areas where I made a couple of calls early on: money and safety. I promise you the school is not looking out for your pocket book (and either is your kid)…that’s on YOU…so you have a right to advocate for yourself when costs are a concern. Enjoy the auditions!
I hear you, @DonniT, the all-day auditions can be grueling! But looking back, my son and I preferred them. The auditions seemed to have more depth (and opportunity), we got a better sense of the program - and because of schedules, the audition was often the first visit - and I could usually find a friendly student etc to ask questions or just soak in the vibe. I also believe the way the schools conduct their audition day reveals a lot about the program.
