T or F: A degree at ASU is not impressive?

I'd like to go to ASU but everyone says it's a joke because literally EVERYONE can get in.

But does it really matter, as long as I get good grades? My dad went to CSUN (people say that school isn't impressive either), got decent grades (3.5) and got into medical school in the caribbean.

I just don't see how people can look down on a college. Isn't any extra education considered impressive?

what are your thoughts? :)

I know some smart people who went to ASU (e.g. now at a top PhD program in major).

However, it is true that the “low end” bar for admission is pretty low. Because ASU is the largest of only three state universities in Arizona, you are likely to encounter some students like those at the top of the class at Berkeley or UCLA, and others like those who barely made it into the least selective CSU.

Getting past the initial screening in medical school admissions is mostly about GPA and MCAT scores.

There’s a lot of school elitists out there. An ASU degree will not hold you back.

UCBalumnus summed it up well.

Furthermore, you should be considering the ranks/prestige of individual programs, not the school as a whole. My uni is pretty average in overall ranks (something like #56 on USNWR), but my programs are both top 10 in USNWR.

It drives me crazy when people get so wrapped in the “prestige” of various colleges and universities. I am a firm believer that if you are intelligent and self motivated, you can be successful no matter where you go to college. There are many on the CC forum who feel differently however. Don’t let them get to you. Follow your dream.

It’s worth remembering that up until a few decades ago, even the best public universities accepted the overwhelming majority of applicants. The idea of a public school’s selectivity being a proxy for how “prestigious” the degree is is a relatively recent phenomenon.
