Taft School.

could you tell me anything about taft?

much appreciated

It has a beautiful campus.
I halfway applied, and then my friend told me that it doesnt accept many Asians, so I had my teachers throw out the recommendations (not that it was hard, it was a common rec) and I put the viewbook somewhere LOL
Probably the only reason I didnt apply was the Asian thingy :P

I think it's a great school
I didnt help much, but good luck anywayy :D

D applied and went for a revisit. liked taft a lot, though she chose a different school. almost all classes are in one building which makes for a close community. all of the administration and faculty keep open doors to stay very involved with students...

They do not accept Asian students very well. That is what I heard.

The school has a very large(15%?) Asian population, yet I will concede they for the most part are extremely rich or extremely smart/hard working. Taft is a top boarding school on the level of Choate if academically a little below DA and Hotchkiss, yet it is a great place for both fun+learning.

my mom went to taft and graduated in the early 80s and there were lots of drugs and she said i definitely shouldn't apply there because of their laxer drug policy...she loved her latin teacher, mr. cobb, and he's still there :)

Haha Mr. Cobb is the man. For the record the drug policy is almost identical to other prep schools--two strike policy. You get in trouble the first time and you get kicked out the second time. Drugs are not really done at Taft at all and no one in the past 4-5 years has been caught as far as I know. No offense, but kind of a dumb reason not to look somewhere.

My D will be going to Taft as a 10th grader. She was accepted at Taft, Middlesex, NMH and Tabor, and was waitlisted at DA and Hotchkiss. I have heard somewhere that there are fewer Asians at Taft than other BS, but my D is a Korean American (but we live in Tokyo now) so I don't know what any of this means.

We are very happy with the result because Taft was one of the top choices in my D's list (along with Choate and DA). Some of the factors why we liked Taft:

Size - about 600. Not too big (e.g. Exeter) Not too small (e.g. Middlesex)

Location - near New Haven and easily accessible from NYC. Being born in NYC, she has friends in NY/CT area. Also she's a Yankees fan. :) She also found NMH or SPS way too remote.

Environment - it has a very nice campus. It is very conveniently organized because you never have to travel very far for classes and facilities. Buildings look stately and handsome, without being too intimidating. (I found Andover too college-like. I loved SPS campus, but my D thought there may be too many bugs. She is such a city girl.)

Academics - this is hardly scientific, but I have talked to many people about Taft and BS. The impression I get is that it seems to have the right balance between study and fun. I know smart kids who have gone to Andover and have their self esteem completely destroyed. The school seems to have more support system for the students compared to other schools. As a father, this was probably the most important factor to me.

Taft is one of the few schools that offered Japanese (although they are phasing in out.) She was doing French 2 and Japanese 2 in 9th grade, so she would have taken French if she went to other schools, but she really wanted to continue her Japanese.

Karma! They were just friendly and helpful throughout the process. Since our visit and interview, we continued to get notes and letters from them. Such efforts from schools make you feel more welcome. Taft, DA, NMH, SPS and Tabor were all very friendly, while Choate and Andover were less so.

I suppose we will soon find out how our decision will turn out, but so far we are all very happy (but sad, for me, for having to let her go...)
