Take a B or drop with a W?

I have a 4.0 so far with 30 quarter units. In one of my classes right now I am sure I will get a B. Should I drop it to preserve my GPA? I don't know which looks worse. Time is also a factor, if I drop more classes I may not be able to transfer in two years.

What’s your major and what UC are you aiming for?

CS major, ideal goal would be Berkeley but target schools are SD/Davis.

Edit: the class I have a B in is math, a major course

^ If I was in the same situation, I wouldn’t drop the class unless I got any grades less than B. Otherwise, it would be a waste of time and money. And the most important thing is that, are you really sure that retaking this course can guarantee a grade of A? In my opinion, B is acceptable based on your situation.

It’s tempting to say take the B. You have a perfect GPA, and you’ll barely blunt it. You would surely get into SD and Davis with that B. Berkeley is another story though. You need around a 3.9 to be competitive for a CS major. If it were a GE class than that’s one thing, but it’s a major requirement which makes it that much more important.

I would do this. If dropping the math class will put you behind a year, don’t drop it. If it doesn’t set back your transfer a year, then drop it. And if you do drop it ask your teacher if you can still attend class. You’ll have carved out this time from your schedule for the entire semester. You might as well use it. That way you can understand everything, and by the time you retake the class, it’ll just be a review.

P.S. Don’t worry about having a W on your transcript. Admissions don’t care if you have a couple W’s on your transcript.

I was in the same situation last semester and my college counselor advised me to take a W rather than a B and keep a 4.0. W’s are not a deal breaker.
