Take a "W" or a bad grade?

I’m a college freshman at a topic public college who plans to transfer after my first year to similarly ranked (top 30) colleges (my current university doesn’t have the major I want to pursue).

I have mono right now, and have missed 3/8 weeks of class. I have kept As in 4/5 classes but am struggling to play catch up in my 101 language course. I have a week to decide if I should drop it.

I had a makeup exam that I did poorly on, and honestly, it could go either way for me at this point. I can see myself getting a B or even an A, but I can also see myself getting a C.

Dropping the class would not only give me a “W” but would drop me down to 12 hours. This looks VERY bad for the level of schools I’m applying to.

What should I do?

Have you looked into getting a medical withdrawal or something?

If that wouldn’t work I’d probably take the W.

@bodangles I am going to academic advising on Monday, but from what I can tell it simply does not exist unless you fully leave for the semester.

I think that having mono is a very good reason to take a W. If you can get A’s in 12 units with mono that is actually sort of amazing.

@DadTwoGirls Thank you. Luckily, I’m currently enrolled in writing classes, which are easy for me. I didn’t get hit as hard as most people by mono. I just worry that this will impact me because of how competitive transfer admissions are for top schools…I do have two As (6 credits) from a summer session. Hopefully that will mitigate it somewhat.

Do y’all think colleges will understand my medical excuse or just think I’m lazy/failing?

You have a solid medical reason. The way I see it, for your situation, having a couple of W’s > having a completely tanked GPA.

Just remember to explain why you had to drop the classes.

@TransferStalker It’s one of those classes that you can’t fail, but I just don’t think I can do well in it.

So I got approval to drop the class today, apparently there is no way to get the “W” removed:/
