Take another class with specific major?

I'm an incoming freshman deciding between schools right now, and UW looks super appealing, but...

HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION:

If I major in communications at UW, would I be able to take an art class, too? (as an elective of course).

I ask because some schools I know are very strict with what classes which majors can take.

Art classes all give priority to art majors, so they are very hard to get into. Check out this web page as a start to understanding how to work the system to get into closed/restricted courses. The links on the right hand side are helpful too - the detailed info on registration, time schedules, etc.

You can register for lower-division classes if they have no restrictions. I only see the 300-level classes requiring you to be in the major.

Sometimes, you can register for upper division courses for another major if they have space. You’d have to talk with the teacher and advisors for an add code, though. They’d also make sure you satisfied the prerequisites or have the equivalent background - that would be on a course to course basis.
