My kid is interested in majoring in either biology or chemistry but would also like to take some art classes like ceramics. Is it possible to take art classes as a non-art major?
I actually don’t see any ceramics classes in the art class listings - but in general art classes are open to all students - more advanced art classes will require that you have the prerequisite classes. Most classes are open to students in any major - especially lower level classes. You are not restricted to only classes in your college and the “core” requires you to take stuff across different subjects (the core is changing this year but the idea is the same).
Art classes were a case where even intro classes were marked as for art majors only. As a neuro major who enjoyed art, this concerned me. However, when I went to orientation and asked my advisor, she was able to put me into a drawing course with no trouble. These classes are listed as majors-only to make sure the students in the major get into their required courses, but if there were spaces available I never had trouble taking such courses. (I only ever encountered this in the art department. As kiddie said, most classes are totally open.)
Thanks for the info.
