Take Chem 1a or not

Hey guys, i'm an intended public health major (non-premed track), and chemistry is not a requirement..i was wondering if not taking the Bio 1a route will leave me in a position in which I am in a disadvantage applying for the major

Thanks

I don’t know what your question is but chem gives extra credit so why not.

Oh hey! sorry i thought I had responded to that pm haha. in all honesty, i think your grades are what matter most for the major and demonstrating through your ECs that you are interested in PH. if you are positive you are not premed, take the other route and dont look back. i dont think it should put you at a disadvantage because there are plenty of PH majors who are not premed and are also more focused on policy as yourself.

to be absolutely sure, why dont you make an appointment to meet with Tony? He will tell you black and white whether or not you will be disadvantaged without bio 1a. he is not a wishy washy guy and he will give it to you straight.

(fyi you know bio 1a also requires ochem right? you cant go from chem 1a straight to bio 1a/l. and there is extensive problems sets/lab reports for 3a/l and you will spend your entire life memorizing the 1al reader-just search the forum for 1al and you will see how many ppl truly despised this class-myself included.)

best of luck :)

Thanks a lot for the help! I actually did talk to Tony earlier in the school year…he said people actually struggle with genetics without Bio 1a. It just seemed like he wanted me to take the bio 1a route…especially when he helped plan what i should take for the upcoming semesters. But in the end, i still dont want to do med school…so i think im gonna stay with the non-med route. Thanks for the help Waiting4College

if you have the option to not take it (e.g. AP exam, not part of requirement, etc.), please don’t take it.

yeah. dont let tony’s pressure get to you. you will be grateful when you have a nice gpa later which will probably get you into a decent MPH program.

and no problem :)
