I may have an offer on the table for a 90-100k/year marketing management job in the consumer goods sector I have been working in for the past few years. I want to get my MBA however, and the hours required for this position would make it impossible to obtain while working.

So... what would you guys do? Take a solid offer of nearly what I would expect post MBA? Or get the degree and have the safety of the letters behind your name and the alum networks??

well… the point of the degree is so you can get a certain job, right? The degree itself is of no value. The value is in what the degree lets you do. So if you don’t need the degree to get what you want, then…

of course, late down the line, it might be helpful for the “next” promotion or whatever. That is something I can’t really comment on. Do they only promote people that have an MBA? At worst, you can delay the MBA for a couple years. The new job will only make you a better candidate.

I guess my worry is that once I get started on that career track it will be difficult to step off, and get back into school mode for two years possibly squelching further opportunity with that employer. I’m wondering about long term earnings potential and marketability… aka in another 10 years time will I be better off having had this job experience under my belt, or better off with a top or near top tear MBA… I know there’s a lot of variables at play obviously though lol.

I’d take the offer and then try to finish the MBA at some point in the future if possible. You can always get a degree. Availability of jobs varies.

It is very difficult to go back to school to complete a bachelor’s degree once you’ve started down a career track, but it is absolutely common to go from career to MBA and back to career.

A great many people wait until a company offers to pay for their MBA before even applying to programs. I would take the offer and worry about the MBA later. As you rise up, companies become more flexible with allowing you to take time to get education. You might be able to go PT for awhile so you can dedicate more time to getting the degree.

Yes, I know. I did exactly that. And then got my grad degree. I know lots of people that did this and some that tried it and never got their degree but still just kept on working.
