Would it be a good idea to take a physical anthropology online course during summer and the lab in the fall? The lab's not offered right now but I need the course. What should I do?

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Usually labs and lectures are integrated to some degree, so I would think that taking the lab without the lecture removes some of the context. Also, make sure that this is even allowable where you go to school.

A lot of people at my community college take lab and lecture separately. Usually the school will enroll around 150 students for say, chemistry, but only be able to place 50-75 in a lab class, so it’s fairly common here.
You’ll have to make sure that they aren’t integrated though, like Alf said. Some are, some aren’t.

Taking both at different times COULD hurt your performance in the lab because like stated above they mostly go hand in hand with each other. The lecture and lab I took for BIO was basically the lab building off of the lecture. I personally have not seen a lab class that is not integrated with a lecture but I can say that taking both at the same time was good for me.

My daughter took Chemistry at UCSD where they pretty much expect you to take the lecture and lab at different times. It wasn’t 1-1 in terms of classes either - like 2-3 quarters of lecture and 1 quarter of lab. Pretty strange to me since all my Chem classes came with a lab at the same time, but that’s the way they do it now.
