On my first (and probably only) ACT I got a composite 35,
English: 34
Science: 35
Math & Reading: 36
Essay: 9, Combined: 32
I’m going to apply to Stanford as a reach, and I know that Stanford requires all SAT scores, so I would have to send whatever score I get on the SAT. I know that my ACT scores are good enough to the point where my ECs, academic grades, and course rigor will decide whether or not I get in. However, I have already signed up for the January SAT (I did this back in October, before I even knew the ACT was a thing), so my only option would be to not show up for the SAT on test day. College Board doesn’t allow cancellations.
On the SAT I can conformably score around 2300, with CR being my weakest section. Given that the top 25% of Stanford accepts have an SAT score of 2350 or above (34 or above on ACT), should I not take the SAT? I don’t see how it could help me.
Honestly, I wouldn’t bother because a 35 ACT is stellar. Since Stanford requires all scores it could potentially be detrimental. I wouldn’t risk it. Good luck!
In the words of my daughter, “Why would you waste a perfectly good Saturday morning?” You’re done (unless you need to certify a PSAT score for NMF).
In our case taking both hurt for stanford. D got a 36 on ACT and only 2070 on SAT. She applied EA this year and got rejected. You have a very, very strong ACT and it’s highly unlikely you would score as high on the SAT. Normally, I would advise students to take both and use whichever score is better. In your case you already have the “better” score in the bag.
Don’t waste your time. Use the time that you would study for/spend taking the SAT on other things, such as subject tests, EC’s, and schoolwork.
@Wje9164be I really doubt the SAT score hurt your D’s Stanford application. I’m sure she’ll get into another very good school.
