Going through the EA admits' profiles I noticed almost all had taken the sat and in some cases both the sat and the act. Just a handful had taken the act only. I got a 34 on my act and 800's on math2 and chem. So do I really need to take the sat? TIA

My DD was accepted last year with a similiar ACT score and no SAT so you should be fine without the SAT.(unless you feel that you can obtain an SAT score comparably higher than the ACT 34)

I got in with 35 ACT and 800, 800, 780 on SAT subject tests. No SAT. In your case, only take the SAT if you are sure you can score really well or if you want NM scholarship money.

The OP would have had to have taken the PSAT first and achieved finalist status for him to receive National Merit money.

actually my GC, who went to some conference or other with various admissions reps, told me the Stanford rep said they “slightly prefer the ACT+writing”. not sure exactly what that implies, because I’m suspicious of my GC’s expertise in general and perhaps the guy was just expressing his personal bias, but bottom line is it probably doesn’t matter which you take. your SAT II scores help, too.

Thx. I should have stated earlier that I got a 8/12 on the act essay and a 31 on science (my future major) with 35,35,34 on the other three sections. Do your responses still hold? Thx

Yes, I think that you are fine with the 34 composite

34 composite’s good. I got in with only ACT scores sent. I doubt it makes a difference. Unless you have reason to believe that your score on the SAT will be significantly better than a 34 (which is hard to do) then there’s not much point to taking it.

My S got in last year with a 34 ACT and 800 Math II and 750 Physics. You should be fine if everything else in your application is competitive. Good luck.

Thanks folks. It’s the 31 in science I worry about :-<
