Took it for the first time in March. Got a 740 CR, 620 M, 690 W with a 10 essay. Took it again in June and got an 800 CR, 640 M and a 740 W with an 11 essay. In total 2050 vs 2180.

Is it worth it to try again? My dream school right now is Cornell, a college that doesn't do score choice. Will a third time look bad to schools without score choice? I haven't decided on what exactly I want to major in but it will most certainly not heavily involve math. THe lone exception I am considering is economics. Will a 640 in math preclude me from getting into a mid-tier (good, but not ivy level) econ major?

Only if you can raise your score by at least 100 points, or else it’s not worth it. You showed great improvement, so I’m sure you could do that once more. Just focus on math and try to bring that up to 700.

After having 2 daughter’s take both the SAT’s and the ACT’s, I truly believe there is a randomness to some of their scores. In other words, both of them had a score go up between 50 to 100 points without any additional preparation. There is nothing wrong with taking the SAT 3 times. No school will penalize you for it. Cornell may not have score choice, but they will superscore–so any score that does go up will help you.
