I just graduated college, but my degree didn’t require a class in foreign language. I did not take a class in foreign language at college and I regret not taking one. Can taking one at a local community college help with resumes and career opportunities?
Like so many things- it depends! Where you live, what field you are in, what language you learn, how well you learn it will all affect how much of a difference language skills will have for your career.
There are a lot of proficiency scales, but a widely used one is the CEFR scale (https://www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/table-1-cefr-3.3-common-reference-levels-global-scale). Ime, it’s when you get to level B1 that language skills start being an asset.
If you learn best in a standard classroom, a class at the local community college may work for you- but it will not necessarily be any less expensive than doing a course through a language school and you won’t get any ‘extra’ credibility no matter how you learn it. To get to B1 will take a LOT of self motivation, so think about how much you want this extra skill and how best to use all the many tools there are now for learning a new language. Figure on it taking a good 18+ months.
