So I'm considering going to college out in the northwest like Washington or Oregon. Either UW, portland state, or even Seattle Central for a bit. If I was to take a gap year and getting residency in one of those states could I get instate tuition? Note: I have no legal guardian and as far as I know I would be consider an independent student or dependency override. That being said could I get in state tuition if I support myself for a year? Will I be able to receive financial aid?

Yours is an unusual situation in that you have no legal guardian…is that correct?

I would first look at the school websites for information on establishing residency. But honestly, I think you will get your best answer by contacting some directly at the colleges you wish to apply to.

Yes. If you do not go to school, but are a proven resident of the state then you will be able to get in state tuition. The website will have more information on whatyou need to do in order to obtain residency. (Some schools will let you take a max of 6 credits during this year time, BUT PLEASE CHECK!) I know for sure you will have to prove it with bills such as rent, electric, etc. They will require a copy of your taxes as well, so be sure to have a job lined up asap as timing is everything.

As far as the guardian thing, as long as you file independent then you will get financial aid based on your need.
