Taking a gap year/transferring as a sophomore?

Right now I'm a freshman at the University of Oregon, and im realizing its just not the right school. I've been thinking about transferring or taking some time off, but i honestly have no idea which way to go. Im originally from the bay area (Oakland) and i wanted to transfer to a school near there, close to home. But after checking some schools like SF State and UC Santa Cruz, it looks like none of them accept sophomore or freshman transfers.

I was considering either dropping out after this term (winter) and working and maybe enrolling in community college to get the rest of my credits until i have enough to be considered a sophomore, or finishing out the year and then trying to transfer somewhere else?

Im confused about how all of it works though, if I dropped out at the end of this term would I still get the credits I earned up to now? Does anyone know about transferring as a sophomore and how serious schools are about not accepting them? What would happen if i reapplied as a freshman?

I also know the community colleges in the bay area (CCSF or BCC specifically) have a agreement with CSUs and UCs where they guarantee admission for transfers. Does that mean you would still have to be a junior to be guaranteed the admission? or would that apply to freshman/sophomore transfers also?

BTW I was also accepted to SF State and UC santa cruz before I chose Oregon if that makes any difference. Id appreciate any insight/answers you have about these questions.

Once you’ve earned credits, you keep them. However, the transfer school determines which ones they will give you credit for.

It depends on which schools you’re talking about, some schools accept soph transfers and other don’t. See the UC Transfers subforum for information about UCs specifically.

Schools have different policies about how they define a transfer applicant. Some schools consider you a transfer if you have taken 1 post-HS college class, others have credit or time limits. If you have completed a year of full time college, ANY school will consider you a transfer applicant.

A lot of schools allow freshman and sophomore questions, you just have to check with each school to make sure. If I were you though, I’d take a bit of time off to fight out what you want to do. The Bay Area has a lot if great internship and job opportunities (I was looking at interning in Barbara Boxer’s office, one of many great opportunities offered), you could spend some time working while you decide what you want to do.

You could also take a few classes at a cc while you work just to get some credits.

Quick note, remember that u of of works on the quarter system and that many semester schools might not accept those.

Colleges are used to converting sem and qt units.
