Taking AP credits

Current students: what are your thoughts here? I will have the option of opting out of basically freshmen year from AP, and may Joint Enroll at GT next year. My motivation for taking credit wouldn't be early graduation, I just want to get into harder, deeper courses sooner.

While I'm not a Georgia Tech student at the moment, I know a student who went to Georgia Tech hoping to major in Chemistry and took a bunch of AP credits to opt out of courses - such as the AP Chem credit. At the moment they are now failing Chemistry because the University's course gives a much better foundation then likely anyone has gotten from their AP course. While I'm sure its possible to get away with opting out of a few classes, it may not be in your best interest to pretty much skip freshmen year because it could cause you to struggle in the more advanced courses.

Depends on your major and you.

I'm a business major at Tech, so my APs - Bio, Chem, USH, Calc AB - fulfilled some general core requirements. I also had a good bit of transfer credit from joint enrollment, so I only took one freshman class during my first semester.

Did it hurt me? No. I struggled in the beginning in CS and MATH, but thanks to a change in study habits and a change in test format, respectively, I did much better throughout the remainder of the semester.

One of my hallmates is a Chem. E. major who AP'ed out of chemistry. As far as I know, he had no problems with inorganic chemistry.

Another one of my hallmates, also a Chem. E. major, made a 4 on the Chem exam. He had to work for it, but he did get an A in CHEM 1310.

So, it really depends on you and your major.

Did you do your JE at GT? I'd love to hear how that went for you/anyone.
