AP credits

Is it advisable to cash in on AP credits rather than taking intro courses? I have 5s in Calculus, Physics and Chemistry and will be taking more tests this May

I’m going through the same dilemma. I had a meeting with the Dean of the MSE School, and he said that skipping some courses is harder than skipping others. AP classes in high school claim to be “college level courses”, but the reality of college is significantly more difficult. I’m hoping to get a 4 or 5 on the Physics C Mech and E&M, but I think I might skip only Mech, since skipping intro Physics courses at Georgia Institute of Technology is equivalent to sticking your tongue into a blender.

What is your opinion of skipping the biological principles course

OP- My son has a number of AP credits he can take. He’s planning majoring in EE so he will be taking the credit for English, apush, economics, govt, computer science, calc , biology and maybe Chem. If your major is Biology then I would talk to someone. However if it’s just one of the general courses that you have to take for the degree then I wouldn’t bother taking the class.

@MichiganGeorgia My major is probabably going to be biomedical engineering

Michigangeorgia: I’m a EE major too, but aome of those credits don’t transfer right? I actually planne my ap exams according to what credit I could use for college, and I thought bio and compsci and govt didn’t count ?

Freelancer why’s skipping both physics courses like sticking your tongue in a blender?? I’m thinking of getting credit for both, and calc and English and chem and APUSH

I too would like to know why skipping physics courses is like sticking your toungue in a blender. My high school curriculum has been mainly based on physics olympiads so would you say that the course level is even higher?

@xoxoviviann I noticed on another thread that you were choosing between Cal and Tech. Did you choose Tech over Cal?

Notice that GT is more strict on giving credit than a lot of places. So if they think you know the material, you probably do. If you start to repeat a class, then you lose the credit you could have had, so be careful there.

Better to start in the advanced class and ‘peddle hard’ to keep up, rather than to develop bad habits in your first term in college (‘oh, this is easy, I don’t need to do this homework’).

@xoxo - They may not count in the way you would like them to count. For example the comp science goes for CS 1301 which doesn’t give you credit for the computer science class you have to take for EE but it does give you 3 credits. The Bio goes for BIOL 1510 which might be able to be used for a science elective and the Govt goes for POL 1101 which is listed counts in Core Area E (Social Sciences) and the U.S. Perspectives Overlay.

You need to talk to someone to make sure. I don’t think they are totally worthless just not helpful in the major requirements.

anyone know about AP stat? I know it isn’t accepted in place of a stat course, but can it be used to get any gen ed credit hours or anything?

It’s not listed. So don’t I think you get anything for it.:(

Michigangeorgia: OHHHHH okay I get what you’re saying now!! thanks :)

Andy: yeah I picked tech over cal EECS ! :)

@xoxoviann May I ask why?

Andy: many reasons, actually!

I used to live in California, so I wanted to go elsewhere for college.

I’ve moved abroad for too long and lost my California residency, so tech is actually cheaper for me.

Tech offered me the honors program and cal’s honors program is for sophomores and up, which means there’s no guarantee.

Program-wise: cal offers EECS as a degree and the Cs aspect is a large part of the curriculum. I want the EE aspect purely, which of course requires some Cs knowledge but I don’t want half my courses to be Cs ones. Tech lets me do pure EE with certain required Cs programming courses.

Better impression overall: I’ve seen many loyal tech alumni who tell me that college was the best 4 years of their lives. The cal alumni I know mostly told me it was prestigious, nothing much else.

Tech has a more well rounded experience. The sports scene, Greek life and such are bigger at tech.

Admitted student events: tech did not host one in my area, so I didn’t attend, but people I know who did said they enjoyed it immensely. I attended the cal admitted student event in the country I live in now, and it actually lowered my impression of cal, with the poor planning and everything else.

Since getting admitted, we all started communicating with each other through the c/o 2017 pages set up by the school. The people on the tech page impressed me lots, and they seem to really want to be there. Those on the cal app, not so much.

Uc budget cuts. I can’t afford more than 4 years of college, and I’ve friends at cal who say they’ve had problems registering for intro classes. Definitely a minus point for cal here.

Post undergrad plans. I googled both schools’ data, and tech EE grads have gone on to grad school and law school but cal EECS grads have only gone to grad school and not law school. I’m still considering law school, so I’d really like a law-school friendly environment, and if you look at the prelaw website for tech, they’re associated with many top law schools.

Overall tech just impressed me a lot more. Hope this answers your question ! :)

@xoxoviviannnn - Those are some pretty awesome reasons! I’ll be seeing you at Tech next year then!

Freelancer, cool seeya !!! if you’re on the group you might already know who I am haha :)

Haha, I am in the group, but I’m not sure who you are, there ARE over a thousand people in it

Oh haha I was reading the comments on who’s from where and I think there’s only one person from CT so I went to check it LOL I’m such a creeper but ARE YOU THE CURRYMONSTER

Actually there’re two groups so I must have gotten the group wrong lol
