Long story short, I now unexpectedly have 2 open spots for classes in my junior year schedule next year. To fill one of the spots, I am now considering taking AP English Literature, in addition to AP English Language, so I will not have to take AP Lit senior year. This would allow me more time to spend on college applications my senior year, as I would have already completed one of the APs I had planned on taking.
I'm a fairly capable student; I consider myself to be a decent writer (not the best) and my grades are fine; I have a 4.0 U/W GPA.

However, I have a few concerns:
Would it be difficult to take both the AP Lang and AP Lit exams in the same year? How challenging would it be to receive a 3+ (preferably a 4 or 5) on both?
How detrimental would it be to not have an English class my senior year, when I have to write many college essays? I will have a DE Humanities class that year, but it is not as writing-intensive as an AP English class. I'm worried that if I'm not actively writing as much as my peers that year, it will affect the quality of my essays and put me at a disadvantage in the college admissions process.

I'd love input from anyone that has ever taken both classes/exams in the same year, or opinions on what you all think I should do! Thank you! :)

I took both exams this year, and I feel I did well on them. I actually think you will be at an advantage in writing college applications, having taken the classes as a junior, The key to successful college essays is learning how to write. Since you will be writing all your applications in the fall, it is unlikely that you will forget how to write over the summer. I’d still suggest taking a fun English elective as a senior, either at your HS or as DE.

I did not take english this year because i took english 12 over the summer to free a spot up in my schedule. Honestly, it was the best decision I’ve ever made. It really allowed me to focus this year on classes I do enjoy like multivar and cryptography. For your concern about college essays, I had my freshman year english teacher read mine and edit them (we still keep in touch). I’m sure one of your AP teachers would be willing to do the same.

I took both the exams this year. I had AP Lit, and I had the option of taking AP Lang at the same time, but I decided to be a teachers aid in the AP Lang class instead.

I did way better on the AP Lang exam; I’m sure I got a 4/5 on it (I’d be lucky to get a 4 on AP Lit). Although writing 6 essays in two days was awful (not to mention my allergies decided to kick in the week of AP exams!), I feel like the first exam allowed me to see what I was struggling in essay wise; therefore, causing me to do better on my AP Lang test.

I wrote my college essays around the beginning of my senior year, and I assume you’ll likely do the same. The lack of an AP english class shouldn’t hurt your essays. (For what its worth, my awful essays I wrote for the scholarship applications to schools I didn’t plan on going to actually earned me scholarships from said schools, but the essays to the school I really wanted to attend netted me no additional scholarships.) ((I didn’t make a common app))
