Hello!

We've offered AP Lit forever at my school, but next year (my senior year) they are going to offer AP lang for the first time. If they had informed us of this prior to this year, I would have taken AP Lit my junior year and AP Land my senior year when they offered it, but hey that's our administration for ya. So anywhoozle, I'm much more interested in writing than in literature, so AP Lang appeals to me more than Lit, but I think I would still find Lit interesting.

My question: I've noticed that people generally take ap lang their junior year and lit their senior year... if you had to choose one, which would you choose?

Which class shows more rigor in your schedule? Which one will look best for admissions? I really have no idea the difficulty difference between the classes.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply!

I took AP lang as a junior and I’m currently in lit as a senior. If you like writing more, do lang. At my school, lit is notoriously difficult. For the exam, you would have to be familiar with different authors and know at least a couple books of literary merit, although your teacher would expect you to know several, ranging from various genres. Then, you would have to learn how to write the different essays. IMO, lang is much more enjoyable. It’s less stressful in that there isn’t a lot of pressure to study, and I find the coursework to be much more interesting. For example, one of the essays is the argumentative, which practically gives you free reign. Also, lang may also come in handy when you start to write college app essays.

I’m not sure if one is preferred over another by colleges. If I had to guess, I would probably say lit would be seen as the more challenging since you have both read and write. Still, I would go with lit. :)

I also took both (Lang as a junior lit as a senior) and I truly believe that it depends on what you like to learn about. If you love delving into beautiful pieces by Tolstoy and reading classics by Jane eyre etc then lit is probably the class for you. If you love writing concisely and cleanly, breaking down sentences, analyzing diction and syntax, and focusing largely on nonfiction pieces, take Lang! Honestly, I’m not sure which I would have picked–they were very different!

I took AP Lang as a junior and am currently taking lit as a senior- Lang was much easier for me, even though I find lit more enjoyable. We are on the poetry unit now and I love it- however, I still have a hard time grasping how to write lit essays since you REALLY have to analyze everything. Usually even when you think you have analyzed it it isn’t deep enough, even though you are given a limited amount of time. Speak to your guidance counselor about which he/she thinks the best option would be, although it is ultimately your decision and comes down to what you like.

I took Lang junior year and I’m currently in Lit. Personally I liked Lang a lot better (I prefer writing to reading poetry), and I liked the Lang teacher more than the Lit.

If it were me, I’d do Lang.

I’m a junior in Lit right now but here’s something interesting that people have said about Lang (at least at my school):
the course is designed to have you be doing much better at the end of the year. your first and second quarter grades will be significantly lower than your third and fourth quarter grades. Since these are the grades you will be sending to college, that is something you may want to consider. In on AP Lang class at my school no kid had above an 85 for the first quarter, and that class has kids who have gotten into Harvard, University of Chicago etc.
