Taking classes at Haverford

My daughter is looking at applying to Bryn Mawr for physics next year. She also wants to minor in astronomy but the astronomy classes are at Haverford. How easy or difficult would it actually be to get over there for those classes? Is it actually realistic? The reason she isn’t applying to Haverford is because they don’t offer merit. I’d love to hear thoughts on this by anyone who has actually tried this or has knowledge of someone who did! Thank you!

It is very seamless and very easy to do. Cross registration is simple because both schools use the same system:

Transportation is easy as well. Some even bike or walk in decent weather but their is a Blue Bus system that makes it easy and class times are staggered between the two colleges to make it doable. You can see from this schedule that buses constantly run between the two campuses. https://www.brynmawr.edu/transportation/blue-bus-bi-co

It is very, very common for Bryn Mawr and Haverford students to major or minor at the other college.

In addition, there are many clubs and activities open to students from either campus.

@doschicos Thank you for that information. Sounds like it will be an option to apply there. We are going to visit in April.

BMC parent here, I’m guessing most BMC students take some classes at Haverford (and vice-versa). BMC students can eat in the dining hall at Haverford and can even live in their dorms. Many clubs are bi-co as well.

Swat & Penn classes take a bit more effort and planning, but are certainly doable as well. But Haverford classes are pretty much seamless for BMC students.

@arc918 Thank you! That sounds interesting!

My son is at H taking a class at BMC. It doesn’t seem all that difficult for him to get there. He takes the bus. I would imagine it isn’t any more difficult to get from BMC to H.

My D is BMC grad and she took courses at Haverford all the time. There’s a bus–but it’s not that far.
My D felt that it required more planning/effort to take a course at Swarthmore or Penn, which is not to say that it isn’t possible–just not as easy as registering for a course at Haverford.

Thank you!!

BMC alum – the two campuses are 1 mile apart, a nice walk down Montgomery Ave, cut over to Lancaster Ave (we always crossed by the church affectionately known as “Our Lady of the Railroad” because it was by the railroad overpass). We walked between campuses whenever the weather was good, though the Blue Bus runs all day and late into the night.

Class times on each campus are times so one can go back and forth for class.

My sister attended Bryn Mawr, she took approximately a third of her classes at Bryn Mawr, a third at Haverford, and a third (2 each semester) at Penn. I think she only took one class at Swath. She took full advantage of the Bi-Co and it helped her stand out when applying for internships during summers, and jobs when she graduated. She has close friends from all 3 schools to this day; she lives with a girl from Bryn Mawr, 2 of her best friends are Penn grads, and multiple are from Haverford. (She works in finance in NYC now.) She said taking advantage of the Bi-Co’s offerings took some organization and planning, but that it gave her the best of a small college and large college experiences.
