Convenience of taking classes at Bryn Mawr

I noticed on the Haverford website that many courses are offered only on the Bryn Mawr campus, and that some majors, such as Russian (I think), are taught entirely on the Bryn Mawr campus. How common is it for HC students to take classes at BMC? How convenient is it? What about majoring in a subject that is based at BMC? Obviously, a female student would have a choice of which school to apply to, but I'm asking for a male student. There's a lot my S likes about HC, but I'm wondering if it is perhaps so inconvenient that he should just cross HC off the list? Of course, he doesn't know what he would major in, but I know he is interested in Russian.

In the 5-college area in MA (Amherst, Smith, MHC,Hampshire,UMass) they say students can take classes at the other schools, and I know students do, but I know from people who've done so that it can involve an inconvenient amount of travel time and isn't as common as the admissions office might lead one to believe. So, I'm just wondering how the HC/BMC arrangement compares.

Thanks so much.

My understanding is that taking courses between Haverford and Bryn Mawr is seamless. The tri college system includes Swarthmore, but transportation is a bit more of a problem. Courses at the Univ of Pa are also possible.

My D is applying to both, and the HC alumnus she interviewed with had a double degree--one from Haverford and one from Bryn Mawr.

Almost everybody takes courses at both colleges. The course guide and schedules are completely integrated so that many classes start on the 1/2 hour at HC and the hour at BMC, and the blue bus runs back and forth all day. For example, you might take a 9-10 AM class at BMC, then a 10:30-noon class at HC. It's only a little over a mile, too, so you can walk it in 15 minutes. My brother's HC roommates major at BMC because Cities is only offered there. Not that big a deal at all. And, yes, you can take classes at Swarthmore but the van doesn't run as often and it takes 20-30 minutes to get from there to bi-co.

i've taken now my fourth class at bryn mawr...it takes maybe 6-15 mins to get there on the blue bus and its very easy...the walk to the blue bus stop is 10 mins from the apartments and 3-4 from anywhere upcampus...the classes at brynmawr also start 10 minutes after the time given,so u have plenty of time to get there.

It is right on the CTA red line, so it is really easy to get to

Thanks so much. Gotdizzy, you answered my other question, which was going to ask how long it would take to walk from HC to BMC? The bus sounds very convienent, but it's nice to have an option to walk on a nice day or if one has just missed the bus.

Here’s the bus schedule. During the day, there’s also a sweeper van that follows behind to catch straggling kids. I believe there're a couple thousand cross-registrations each year.

<a href="http://www.brynmawr.edu/transportation/bico.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.brynmawr.edu/transportation/bico.shtml</a></p>

One of HC’s strongest points is its location, both in terms of BMC and Philly.

it is A LOT longer to walk to bmc than 15 minutes ...atleast 25-30...if u miss the blue bus u will def end up missing half of ur class or most of it if u walk it. bike is possible though.

So this relates to the academic (and social) opportunities that HC kids have because of the bi-co synergy. Archaeology isn't offered at HC but it is at BMC and this is what one HC grad did with that opportunity... so yes, students can easily major @ BMC. :)

That's very impressive. Thanks for posting that link.

Thanks for those additional links. I had actually turned up a couple of them through my own searches, but one I hadn't seen was the one for Prof. Wagner, one my favorite professors when I was at Williams. I either hadn't known or hadn't remembered that he had gone to Haverford.

As BMC and HC are so close, we should also be proud that Harvard's new president is a graduate of BMC! The Bi-co rocks!
