Taking CS 61A without Math 1A

I'm currently enrolled in Cogsci 1 and CS 61A for the fall, and my Phase II is July 17th. All three Math 1A lectures currently have full waiting lists, so it doesn't seem like I'll be able to get the class at all.

Because Math 1A is a prerequisite (or corequisite) for CS 61A, could I be dropped from 61A?

If it matters, I got a 5 on AP Calculus AB. (I do plan on retaking 1A though to better prepare me for 1B.)

Well, the thing about classes at Berkeley is that nobody checks you for your prereqs. So even someone who didn’t take Math 1A (or AP Calculus) could still take CS 61A.

Besides, CS 61A (or at least, when I took it) does really use calculus. When I took CS 61A, pretty much the only time they mentioned calculus stuff was when they talked about Newton’s Method, and even then, you didn’t really have to be a calculus expert to understand the concept and its usage.

You may want to check to old Math 1A final exams; if you know the material well, just go to Math 1B.

@GinyuTokusentai Thanks! There seems to be quite a long waitlist for 61A that it occurred to me they can very well purge students that didn’t meet the prerequisites to accommodate those on the waitlist.

@ucbalumnus I took Calc AB junior year, and Statistics senior year, so most of my calculus knowledge has escaped me. Thanks for linking me to the site, though it just confirmed that I now know very little how calculus!

EECS enrollment is weird… the waitlist is probably a result of the new policies. You can read about it here: [Getting Into CS Classes | EECS at UC Berkeley](Getting Into Computer Science Classes - Google Docs)

Calc isn’t really used in 61A, I wouldn’t worry about that pre-req too much.
