Hi, I didn’t know where it was appropriate to place this so I just asked here:
This is really early to be asking, but my cousins are having a big wedding in December and they have tickets for us to leave on December 14th, but I’m unaware of when the finals will actually take place… In the case that it DOES take place past the 14th, is it possible to take the finals a week or a few days earlier?.. Also, I’m not sure if it would be appropriate to even ask to take finals earlier to go to a wedding (it just sounds a little awkward, unless it were to be a funeral, etc)
thanks
If this is college, I would wait until after classes have started before you make any trip plan. My kid’s professors to date have all been very reasonable, but they do not need be. When students take the exam early, professor often has to create different exams to prevent cheating, and it is extra work. You can always meet up with your family after you are finished with your finals. It is only Mar, there is no reason to have to make flight reservation so early. A lot of students fly cross country to go home for holidays, and they do not make such plans until they know their exam schedule.

They already bought the tickets before checking with you to find out if the dates are acceptable???
Many (most?) schools will not do this because of exam security; they don’t want one student knowing what all of the questions are before the rest of the class sits for the final. You should be in touch with your school, not CC, for this question.
The probability is slim to none that they will give you an early exam for the reasons that @snarlatron mentions, but they may give you a late exam. You would really need to ask the instructors in question after the dust settles and the dates are known.
Many (most??) high schools advise against planning family vacations to coincide with academic commitments, so don’t be surprised if you receive a negative answer. After all, it’s not like it’s that close a relative from a consanguinity point of view.
You can always ask. The worst that can happen is they say no.
if you are in HS, it probably should not be a problem. But obviously, its up to the teacher(s) since a wedding would not be treated like a medical emergency absence.
Is this a big wedding/family reunion in Asia? They might cut you more slack if that is the case.
I’d suggest that you go to your school guidance office now and explain the situation. Ask if they have any idea when exams will be scheduled next semester. If they say that exams are likely to be going on until, say, the 18th, you can see if your cousins can change your ticket or your family’s ticket now. (I’m assuming they are doing this in advance to take advantage of some fare deal.)
incidentally, you might check your school calendar. Our HS final dates are scheduled/calendared at the beginning of the year, and it is available online. The schedule even includes which day which final is on, i.e., Day 1 = Periods 1 & 8, Day 2 = Periods 2 & 7…
My daughter took all of her exams early the year she was a HS freshman. She was in a children’s choir that was leaving for Ireland…a week before school ended. In addition to taking exams early, she also missed her brothers HS graduation. Oh well.
We discussed this with the faculty very early in the term…like before we sent in the deposit for the Ireland trip. They had no issues giving the exams early.
But YMMV depending on the policy of your school.
As an aside, this same daughter had to take midterm college exams early one term because of a family wedding on the opposite coast. Again…arrangements needed to be made well in advance.
@mom2collegekids nono, they want to know before they order today, I talked with the counselor and he suggested I proceed with purchasing the tickets as we will sort things out later next year
Problem w taking the finals late is that there is a deadline for teachers to submit final grades.
