I'm planning on applying for Spring 2010 transfer to Rice. I've been thoroughly impressed with everything about the school so far!

Looking at the math courses (Rice University Catalog 2008-2009), I'm assuming that 400 courses are graduate courses. I was wondering if Rice allows undergraduates to take some of these courses (I'm looking at Math 401, 402, and 443 through 445 in particular). Does anyone here know?

If nobody knows, would it be appropriate for me to email someone at the math department at Rice and ask? This is rather important for me because there are some topics I definitely want to take as an undergraduate, so I don't want to transfer and then find out that I can't take them!

As far as I know, the 500 level and beyond tend to correlate with graduate level courses.

I’m in CAAM, so it’s a little different from MATH, but some of the classes (Real Analysis, Numerical Analysis, and electives) are usually taken by both undergrad and grad students. I haven’t seen a “graduate students only” bar on registration.

If you can’t register online, just talk to the prof and make sure s/he’s ok with you taking a graduate level class, and get him/her to sign the “add course” sheet, and voila, you’re in.

In essence, you should still be able to take it, assuming you have all the pre-requisites done.
