I have already ran out of courses for certain academic tracks at my school, so I’m looking to take some rigorous, online university-level courses alongside my other classes at school. I’ve looked into Stanford OHS; is that a good option? Are there other options that may be better?
D took higher level Math on line with Johns Hopkins. This was 4 years ago. It was self-paced, working with an instructor one-on-one. The cost was around $1,200 per semester so pricey, but it was also accepted in her school district for academic credit.
I would check your university’s specific policies regarding transferring credits in and/or dual enrollment. You might have to prove you can not get the same courses/background at your current university or something like that, but it really depends on the university. Also, you’d have to make sure you still take enough courses at your current university so that you do not drop down to part-time status and miss out on financial aid. (This is important because the full time plus extra online courses may lead to you over extending yourself credit-wise). Also, make sure you get whatever you plan to take approved by your university registrar because they have to check the accreditation and all of that.
All of that said, it could be a really good option to supplement your typical education. I haven’t looked into the specific Stanford program much, but as long as the program is accredited, you should be fine.
N’s Mom: I think JHU requires that the students are in their CTY (talented youth) program.
No, D wasn’t in that program. It was open to the public, so far as I recall.
