Oh yeah, if you are alone, please use the security there to take you home. It is free, and just as Mark says, campus can be safe, but alone at night is not a good thing.

edit --

Would you say these kind of beatings occur many times, occasionally, or rarely?

They are very rare - keep in mind you're in Newark, Delaware...

2003 Aggrevated Assault: 5

See the stats:

USC,

Yes I know UMD is probably less safe than UD but
UCONN not safe???? It's in the middle of nowhere.

I didnt say not safe, but the stats for campus occurrences were less. The last time I looked was 2003, but UD crime incidents were lower than both those schools. I would look that up though for up to date stuff, most of these schools ae honest about what happens. The male thing, I don't know. I walked alone or with friends, but hindsight tells me a few occassions I should have used it. As a male myself, I think I would be self concious doing it. (not good enough reasoning to avoid)

Can I ask a couple of questions for my son here? He is intersted in Electrical or Computer Engineering. He's a junior now. We have a good friend who just started at U Del (and, so far, loves it).

How big are the classes?
Are all engineering students housed together?
Could you be in honors and engineering?

Thanks!

Oops - one more thing...are merit scholarships available to out-of-state students?

Classes vary in size. Engineering they are small, some can be 150, 200. Although, you always have a professor, not this garbage they do in other schools where you never see the good professors.
No they are not housed together
and of course you can be in honors, all my engineering friends were.
Most definitely, there is no preference of scholarship in state versus out of state if it is by merit, unless something changed.

USCGrad:
Thanks for your reply. I'm a little confused about your coment on class size. Are you saying that 150, 200 are small? Or were you saying that most are small, but some are 150, 200? Thanks again.

I'm sure he's saying Most are small but some can be as big as 150-200 people. My classes were all small for my four years - I never had a class over 150 people and the large marjority (85%+) were under 40 students.

Exactly what Mark said. When I was undeclared my first year I had big classes, yet my english class was still only 18 people as a first semester freshman. Biggest class I had after I declared spring of freshman year was something like 35, 40 people.

Thanks everybody!

All of my honors classes are under 25 students.

Weenie, there are merit scholarships for out-of-state students. It's the only reason I am able to go here actually.

My grad school alma mater posted an article on U of Delaware today:

Hey all,

As I was looking at Udel's application, I noticed something different from the supplement than the app Udel has on its site. For the honors program essay--the supplement asks to describe an intelectual improvement while the application on udel's site asks a totally different question..Which should I attempt? Is it just commonapp.org not being updated? Or what?

I doubt it's a matter of updateness, since the commonapp connects you directly to udel's site. So, I'm guesing it's supposed to be 2 different questions?

Also, Do you [all] think that I should do the common app, or Udel's own application? Is there an advantage of using Udel's own application? (Do they [adcoms] favor it? Does it give u an edge?)

Thanks,

Amit

I'd call the office.

Oh boy....

any other suggestions? (Also, can you answer my other questions concerning whether using their app gives me an advantage)

That is definitely something you are going to have to find out on your own. I would think to myself why not fill out the Delaware application though.

I see;

and what about the difference in the honors program question, just fill out udel's app and not worry about it?
