Taking Questions for Future Blue Hens!

The honors portion of the application has its own questions that you must answer. At least that's how it was when I did it.

I'll answer some questions... I'm a student at UDel now.

I applied out of state, did NOT apply for honors. Now, read some of my past posts and you'll learn that I'm no super smartie but just normal. I was accepted into the honors program and got a decent amount of scholarships. I think it totaled about 10K a year... which is a big chunk of the $16K total.

I'm doing civil engineering and contrary to what other posters have said, I find that alot of engineering students DON'T do the honors program even though it is offered to them. So far I've enjoyed my honors classes... one has 11 students and the other has 23. My general chem class is HUGE with like 200 students but I sit in the front row with all my friends and the professor already knows our names and chats with us before class.

Ummm... lets see. My averages were WAY below what they normally accept to the honors program so don't be afraid of the numbers... believe it or not they do look at other things. The dorms are pretty terrible but aren't all college dorms?!? The people are great, all of my professors speak English exceptionally well(and I'm in some high level maths too), and the campus is really nice.

Any other questions? LOL

Anovice,

My D is considering UD. Did you take SAT2's in order to qualify for honors?? I see the school recommends taking them for the honors program. She hasn't bothered, since there hasn't been a need until now.
She can still squeeze one in in November.

Thanks,

No... I didn't. I actually only submitted the ACTs because my SATs were not so great. Delaware was not even close to top on my list of schools but when it came close to decision time, it suddenly became pretty appealing. It's a nice school... not too big, not too small. Campus is pretty easy to get around on. I go from one end to the other in under 15 minutes and thats at a leisurely stroll while I'm talking on my cell or talking with someone I'm walking with.

I sent UDel 3 SAT2s. I think it really helped me get into honors and get invited to the scholarship competition in March.

I saw that the math department is horrible

I am a potential Math major, would you reccommend not going to UDEL for the reason the math department stinks?

Also, how grade deflated is delaware? particularly the following departments

mathematics(stats, applied, economical)
economics
finance
chemistry(not engineering)

Delaware is probably my #1 pick, but this tidbit of info may change that

ok, its like this. You want a great education with a good overall experience at a nice place, Delaware should remain your #1. If you are dead set in Math as a major, then I suggest looking elsewhere, professors if you actually get one with a phd are awful. Now, looking at what you listed as subjects it seems that you are still interested in other subjects. As many will tell you, your major will most likely change on numerous occassions. More than that, the other subjects you listed are very good and even math econ will be good, you will see the better faculty, as long as you are not just straight math. I do have a few friends who doubled in econ and math and still had a good experience, but the people I knew in math alone that all disliked the dept, but never left because they loved UD. Dont know about chemistry but your grade deflation question is not that bad in econ, math, and finance. Yes you will have to work, but it is not by any measure punitive. If your concern is grad school, the business school will make you look good if you end ahead of the curve, math is tough everywhere and you will be fine there too. Chemistry I know a lot less about besides that it is very good at UD.

Im probably most interested in economical mathematics

I am willing to work, but my brother goes to Penn state, and the math + science professors are required to curve their class to a 65%, which we both think is ridiculous

Habdragon, I'm a chem major if you have any questions about that.

I plan to major in chemical engineering.

how good is the program?

how many people walk this path?

how are the professors?

do you like your major?

have you ever had doubts about it? have you ever wanted to change majors?

any failures?

if you could go through the "picking a college" process all over again, would you still pick and attend udel?

Delaware has a very good program for chemical engineering; it's very tough though, at least if you do the honors program (which I would defnitely reccommend). Freshman year you will have Professor Munson for Gen Chem and Quant Chem (assuming he doesn't retire, he's getting close I'd imagine). Don't go in the class expecting an A; I was 2nd in my high school class and barely have a solid B. He's very good though and forces you to actually learn and understand material rather than be able to regurgitate the same problems in problem solving sets with different numbers. However, his class is so frustrating because you can go into an exam understanding everything and still do bad. If I had to pick a college again, I wouldn't go here, but that's just because I didn't want to go here in the first place and my parents forced me. As a chem major you're going to have a lot of work and it's hard to have time to socialize with the people in your dorm; however, you do get close with people in your chem classes because you're with them so much (I have chem twice a day 3/5 days a week). Most of my friends love it here though. I have wanted to change my major many times this semester (to bio) because Munson's chem classes frustrated me so much. It's tough to put in so much work and have the same GPA as someone who is out having fun every night of the week.

a friend told me about munson, hes a freshman at UDEL, but a ChemE major

Back to the statement when you said "If I had to choose a college all over again, I wouldn't go here".

Well, I'm no ordinary CollegeConfidential student. I don't obtain stragith a+s, my GPA is not 4.0. In fact, I have a 3.2, low SAT score (2020), however, perfect math, 730 math IC and 790 math IIC.. taking 2 AP math classes (AB and Stats) and honors phys. As apparent, I am the math/Sci kind of kid.

If not Udel (Which I am applying this thursday with hopes of making the honors program, highly doubt it though), then which college would fit me?

Amit

Thunda, your stats and mine are frighteningly simular

800 Math
1930 composite,
770IC
800IIC

BC and stats as APs this year, as well as honors physics

3.0 GPA

BTW, your SAT is good for delaware. if you got a 1350(judging by your perfect math you did) your probably in

habdragon,
Who's your friend? I have classes with the ChemE's.

I dont know if I should post his name....

Ill PM it to you
