Taking son to look at Goucher

luvmiballerina, our daughter played three season soccer, basketball and danced in an intensive dance program (ballet, modern, tap, pointe, jazz and hip hop). During her sophomore year she tore her ACL, sprained her MCL and tore her meniscus during a high school basketball game. She was side lined for seven months. During her recovery she realized how important dance was to her well being. She recovered and concentrated on solely on dance. She chose Goucher because she wanted a strong dance program. She is able to take dance classes, which future professional dancers also take, when at the same time she is able to concentrate on a Biology major, hoping to someday be a Physician’s Assistant. Over the past seven years, we have watched dozens of college dance productions and were floored by Goucher’s dance performances. Goucher dance professors must be at the top of their field to take dancers to the level that we have seen in performances. We have two daughters interested in dance, and made it a point to watch fall and spring performances of several colleges, in order to make an informed decision on which college each should attend. Goucher was at the top notch level of conservatories, but had all the amenities of a liberal arts college. I can not say enough about their strong dance program, their commitment to future professional dancers, while at the same time offering dedicated dancers (like my daughter) opportunity to enjoy four more years of their passion.

Don’t let surgeries intimidate your daughter. Our daughter was set back many times, but her passion was what the dance department noticed, not her obstacles.

Good luck!

Warrior123, thank you so much for this info! Do you know when the spring dance performance will be held? I didn’t see it on the website. I agree that would be a great way to get a feel for the program!

luvmiballerina, You may be right, I did not find a spring dance performance on their website. I’ll ask our daughter and get back to you on what options are available for dance performances in the spring. We attended this past fall’s performance, as our daughter was in one of the pieces. We were very impressed, and as mentioned had seen many many college performances when deciding on colleges for two daughters with the interest in a strong dance program. Their program is very ballet and modern based. Faculty is terrific, dancers are strong and courses are extensive. Our daughter who majored in dance at Keene State has taken master classes, along the way, under instructors who graduated from Goucher. We attend professional dance company performances and often notice dancers who we realize (through the program/playbill) are Goucher graduates. They have a strong program, and offer students who have strong technique to continue their passion, through classes, auditions and performance opportunities. This is such a tremendous asset in Goucher College’s repertoire (pun intended!).

Just booked flights to visit Goucher on Mar 2. We are very excited to see the campus and find out more!

Do not have a dancer here, but am still interested in Goucher  Will be visiting (with my son in the very near future.) Any advice is welcome…

Great visit!!! I think he’s determined to accept. Nice dorms good food friendly people; lots of internship opportunities. The Athenaeum is my favorite academic building so far and it’s open 24/7. He really got some clarity from the visit.

Warning though: admissions predicted a $35 cabfare from the airport but they were low by $50!!! Rent a car!!

Did luvmiballerina’s dd and Caesar creek’s ds both visit today? My dd and I visited too. Small world!

If you were at the 10:30 info session or 11:30 tour Friday, we were there too

We visited the school on Friday. Unfortunately we were underwhelmed. DD observed the high intermediate ballet class at 11:00 and was not impressed. She attends a residential arts hs and didn’t feel the level of the teaching or the dancers was even as high her current classes. To have been in session, we found the school to be almost too quiet and lacking a certain energy. The visit served it’s purpose, though, and we now have one less school to worry about applying to.

I guess we missed seeing you by just a bit. We looked in on a class around noon that looked legit. And I didn’t find the campus to be lacking in liveliness- maybe they do sleep in though and you were there early?

Anyway, you are certainly correct that one of the purposes of the trip is to cross schools off the list. Best wishes for finding a better fit for your dd.

Just made a hotel reservation at the Sheraton for April, over the school break. If we also wanted to look at American and/or spend some time in DC, how far is it?
Thanks.

In the information session, the presenter described DC as “anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 hours depending on traffic” (he was partly joking surely…)

Thanks, funny and probably true! :)

I recently visited Goucher with my son, who is a junior. We both loved it, and am happy to read that some others have positive impressions. My son has attention-deficit disorder, which is being treated but still presents challenges for him. We asked an admissions counselor about this, and she assured us they have very good support for students with learning issues. Does anyone have independent confirmation – i.e. real-life experience–with that? thanks!
