Weekends at Goucher

I am a prospective student and Goucher is on my short list. I'm deciding between there and 3 other small liberal arts schools. I'm wondering how the weekend life is at Goucher and if its boring or if there are things to do. Do a lot of people leave on the weekends? Or what else goes on? Anything else about social life or the weekends at Goucher is appreciated. Thanks

Have you visited the school? My son is a freshman and loves Goucher. Other than what I can tell you, there are many threads in the discussion history for Goucher that cover this. I can tell you that they created a new administation post, Director of Student Engagement to make sure there are things scheduled for students to do. Goucher is situated in Towson, which is on the outskirts of Baltimore. The campus itself is beautiful for outdoor activity. They open a new sports field this Fall. It is walking distance to a major mall, small shops and restauarants. There is a shuttle that can take people into Baltimore and the Inner Harbor, for more options. A new huge building, called the Athenaeum, opened last Fall. It is the new campus center. There is a cafe that is open til 3am, performance spaces, the library. There is always something or things going on artistic, cultural,or sportswise. There are also lots of other colleges in Baltimore to add to the list of options. My son never complains about nothing to do, but he is the kind of person who is happy to hang out, or catch up on his sleep. Perhaps you could ask more specifically what you are interested in. Are you M or F?

I’m a M. I have visited and I loved the campus. Sorry for not specifying, but I’m already aware of everything you mentioned. I’m getting recruited for lacrosse and spent time with the guys there but I’m worried because some of the guys said the girls are weird and I’ve heard things like “if you didn’t fit in in high school, then this is the place for you.” I’m also worried about the sense of community. Like if too many people leave on the weekends and go elsewhere because its boring at the school…or what?

I think Goucher has kids of every description. I think there is a sense of community and I don’t think alot of people leave on the weekends. I do think many of the kids are artsy, quirky, but certainly not all. I recall seeing a fair number of sweatshirts with sport team emblems. Do you have time to do an overnight stay? That might help you decide. If you are looking for a school where sports are more of an emphasis, this might not be the best place, but I don’t know what your other choices are.
